Hopkins’ first “dis-invitation”: 

Hopkins’ first “dis-invitation” Norman, Oklahoma. September 2009. Hopkins donated a school visit. Middle school librarian very excited to win and have Hopkins come speak to students. Two days before visit a parent challenged Hopkins books. Superintendent pulled the books (did not read them) and uninvited Hopkins to speak at the school.

Hopkins’ Second “dis-invitation”: 

Hopkins’ Second “dis-invitation” Humble, Texas. August 2010. Hopkins was invited to speak at an annual Teen LitFest scheduled for January 2011. A middle school librarian initiated the dis-invitation by getting a few parents riled up. The superintendent cancelled Hopkins invitation to speak at the Festival.

Hopkins speaks out for intellectual freedom “If you don’t like the content in a book, don’t read it. If you don’t want your child to read a book, take it away. But you do not have the right to decide “appropriateness” for everyone. Ignorance is no armor. And those whose lives are touched by the issues I write about deserve to know they are not alone.” Hopkins, 2010.
