The UCP of Central Florida's East Orange/ Bailes Campus is a new, state of the art, 35,000 square foot facility. The school can hold up to 350 students at full capacity to allow for the development of a collaborative learning and social community.Service Learning Hours: Service Learning Hours I volunteered to be a part of the Halloween Event at the UCP East Orange/ Balies School. The 15 hours were spent on October 27, 2011 for organization of activities, donation separation, and began to set up. October 28, 2011 was the actual event, tear down and clean up of activities. Fellow UCF students were my group buddies during the event.Engagement Activities : Engagement Activities Set up Day Time: 4pm till 7pm Organizing and Planning Who does what? What goes where? How will that work? Event Day Time: 9:30am till 9:30pm Activities/Games Face Painting Stick-on Tattoos Soda Bottle Bowling Spider Ring Toss What’s in the cauldron?service in action: service in actionParticipant Demographics: Participant Demographics Age Range: children, youth, and teenagers Ethnic Backgrounds: culturally diverse with a wide range of linguistics heritages. Exceptionalities: people with cerebral palsy, mild autism, orthopedic impairments, and cognitive disabilities.Perceptions of Differences: Perceptions of Differences Initial thoughts/feelings Worried and lacked knowledge Uncertainties of abilities I had no idea what kinds Thoughts now afterwards Relieved, Rewarded, and Rejoiced Most impact during event The time spent with the guestConnections to EEX4070: Connections to EEX4070 Inclusion Collaborate with curriculum goals on IEP Accommodations Adapt instruction Teacher Implications Participate in the planning process In short, I better understand the course content because I have been able to work with, accommodate, and make the implications needed at this event for the service learning portion of this course.Civic engagement: Civic engagement After volunteering for this event I realized that it had a huge impact on everyone. A positive impact. Not only did our guest feel at ease and enjoyed themselves, all of the UCF student volunteers felt at ease and enjoyed working with the guest with disabilities. This type of event was great for future educators and other members in our society.Final Reflections: Final Reflections I feel that all educators could get more involved in working with students with disabilities because if we are uneducated that means we do not understand the disabilities of our current or future students and their abilities in general. Others could be more objective to people with disabilities and their inclusion in our classrooms. With accommodations and modifications it is possible for all students to be successful. Although there is a great deal of content to cover in any given classroom, the biggest role of a teacher is being a positive role model for all students.
