Persuasive Speaking Task

Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. ON BLACKS IN AMERICA "Before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, we were here. Before the pen of Jefferson etched across the pages of history the majestic words of the Declaration of Independence, we were here. If the inexpressible cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail. We will win our freedom because the sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of God are embodied in our echoing demands."

MAHATMA GANDHI, INDIA:

MAHATMA GANDHI, INDIA

Gandhi, Messiah of Peace and Non-Violence:

Gandhi, Messiah of Peace and Non-Violence What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy? We must be the change we wish to see.

OPRAH WINFREY, Queen of Talk:

OPRAH WINFREY, Queen of Talk It is confidence in our bodies, minds and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures, new directions to grow in, and new lessons to learn - which is what life is all about. Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.

NELSON MANDELA, South African Activist:

Mandela- The Road to Freedom:

Mandela- The Road to Freedom How can I be expected to believe that this same racial discrimination which has been the cause of so much injustice and suffering right through the years, should now operate here to give me a fair and open trial?....consider myself neither morally nor legally obliged to obey laws made by a Parliament in which I am not represented. That the will of the people is the basis of the authority of government, is a principle universally acknowledged as sacred throughout the civilized world.

Unit II Performance Task:

Unit II Performance Task Conduct a PANEL DISCUSSION Using a TV TALK SHOW FORMAT

What is A Panel Discussion?:

What is A Panel Discussion? Using your ideas and information we had discussed in class, brainstorm, plan, identify and decide on a very relevant topic within your level of interest and conduct a Panel Discussion. A Panel Discussion using the modified Talk Show format allows you to discuss issues at certain levels and sides without at all being preachy and biased. A Panel Discussion is an intellectual academic discourse that aim at presenting testimonies and personal positions from your invited guests.

PERSUASIVE APPROACH?:

PERSUASIVE APPROACH? Over the past several years, I have been interviewing, observing, and writing about academic, and political views and issues about people who have the ability to influence their audience—speakers who fire up the rest of us. I outline three techniques you may want to consider in your own repertoire.

Use Dynamic Delivery:

Use Dynamic Delivery A monotonous speaking style lulls the listener to sleep, regardless of the power of the content. 1. Pacing.- vary the speed at which you speak. Very few sentences are delivered at exactly the same pace. 2. Volume- raise the volume of your voice: "We are one nation. We are one people. And our time for change has come." 3. Pauses- Nothing is as dramatic as a well-placed pause. Pause at key moments to make a memorable impact.

How To Do This Project?:

How To Do This Project? Group Work, each consists of 9 members. Identify a very relevant social issue within your level of interest. Brainstorm and discuss for further ideas. Decide a Final Theme/Topic for Panel Discussion. Plan Working Committees: see example next slide. Draw lots for the order of Presentation All Plans must be verified and approved by your English teacher. Present your Panel Discussion/Talk Show in front of an audience at the Spare Room, Ground Flr, HS Bldg during your scheduled presentaion.

Talk Show Host :

Talk Show Host You will be responsible for setting the tone of the discussion, keeping the conversation moving, and maintaining order in case things get out of hand (!).

Talk Show Host :

Talk Show Host Think about the order in which you will ask guests to tell their story and decide which members of your group will ask questions to which guests. You will be responsible for asking your questions to the other groups and encouraging them to ask questions to one another. Think of three questions for each of today’s guests. These questions should be thought-provoking and should go beyond simple yes-or-no questions.

Talk Show Host :

Talk Show Host Decide on a name for our class talk show and decide what kind of talk show it will be. You may choose to model the talk show after a show on television such as those hosted by Oprah Winfrey. Think about your guests for today’s episode of the show and decide on the theme for today’s show.

Guests/Panelists:

Guests/Panelists Assign members of the group to introduce your invited guests minimum of two, maximum of three guests per group It is also possible to get panelists from your group members who can representi the assigned character/historical figure on today’s talk show. Meet as a group and:

Guests/Panelists::

Guests/Panelists: Come up with a short biography in which you will tell your story from your perspective. You may wish to include your personal views on the topic on today’s show. Write three questions that you would like to ask each of the other guests. Keep in mind that these should be questions from your character’s perspective. Try to anticipate any questions that you think other guests might ask you, and think about how you might respond.

Staging the Talk Show:

Staging the Talk Show After the given time to prepare and plan, each group will stage their Talk Show. The group must their show title on the board and then introduce today’s topic. They will then (with coaching from the teacher as needed) introduce each guest in turn and allow the guest groups to express their views on the issue. From this point forward, the host group should be able to moderate the discussion, asking their own questions and encouraging each group to ask questions of the other groups.

Staging the Talk Show:

Staging the Talk Show As the discussion proceeds, the hosts can encourage quieter members to participate, throw in questions of his/her own, and (if necessary) help keep the discussion flowing smoothly and keep the students on-task. This discussion period can last anywhere from fifty minutes to an entire class period.
