Teaching is one of the most honorable profession in the World ! Teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions in this Earth Planet ! Teachers are always a boon to the society who lit the candle of knowledge and imparts a value based education towards moulding our lives ! On this great day, let us proudly salute all the TEACHERS who are inspirational in making everyone a great individual !TEACHERS…: TEACHERS… Great Teachers don’t just teach…, They are Mentors, Advisors, Role Models, Guides, And above all…, Shapers of great Human Beings !Slide 4: Imagine the World without Electricity !HOW THE POWER REACH US ?: HOW THE POWER REACH US ?Slide 7: 21 % 29 % 28 % 12 %Slide 8: Why Energy Conservation ?What is Energy Conservation? : What is Energy Conservation ? Energy conservation is any behavior that results in the use of less energy Turning the lights off when you leave the room and using energy efficient equipment are both ways of conserving energySlide 10: Optimizing generation to meet demand For one’s own benefit - Saving money To Reduce pollution FOR FUTURE GENERATION To preserve precious resources To protect environment –Reducing Global Warming To Avoid acid rain To Avoid ozone layer depletion Benefits of Energy Conservation Energy is like Time – once wasted, It can’t be regeneratedGLOBAL WARMING Climate Change: GLOBAL WARMING Climate ChangeSlide 12: Energy and Environment The usage of energy resources in industry leads to environmental damages by polluting the atmosphere.Slide 13: Smoking Thermal Power Plants – Round the clock !GLOBAL WARMING Climate Change: GLOBAL WARMING C limate ChangeSlide 18: What are the Impact of Global warming?…… Global warming produce extreme weather condition Shifted / changed rainfall pattern Shifted / changed evaporation pattern Heavy flood Severe drought High strength & never heard off cyclone like Hurricane, Katrina, Rita, Fanoos , …… Killer wave Tsunami Scientists argue that Cyclone has doubled in the last 35 years both in intensity and frequencySlide 19: Ozone Depletion Process Depletion process begins when CFCs used in refrigeration and air conditioning are emitted in to atmosphere. After several years they reach ozone layer by diffusion . They react with ozone and destroy Ozone moleculesSlide 20: How Acid Rain Forms?Slide 21: Acidification of lakes, streams, and soils Direct and indirect effects (release of metals, For example : Aluminum which washes away plant nutrients) Killing of wildlife (trees, crops, aquatic plants and animals ) Decay of building materials and paints , statues and sculptures Health problems (respiratory, burning- skin and eyes) Effects of ACID RAINHOW TO CONSERVE ELECTRICAL ENERGY?: HOW TO CONSERVE ELECTRICAL ENERGY? How the Individual can contribute ?DO YOU KNOW THAT ….: DO YOU KNOW THAT …. To set up a power plant, it takes… 5 years. To set up a transmission line, it takes… 1 year. To plan energy conservation, it takes… 1 month. To promote energy conservation, it takes… 1 hour. But to save energy, it needs… just one second!Slide 25: Energy efficiency is the use of technology that requires less energy to perform the same function. A compact fluorescent light bulb that uses less energy than an incandescent bulb to produce the same amount of light is an example of energy efficiency. However, the decision to replace an incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent is an act of energy conservation.Slide 26: SWITCH OFF FANS & LIGHTS, WHEN NOT IN USE Clean the dust in bulbs once in a month. Clean bulbs last longer, due to less heat build-up inside .Change from ICL to CFL: Change from ICL to CFLUSE GOOD QUALITY MATERIALS. BUY FROM REPUTED SHOPS. DO NOT BUY SECOND HAND GOODS: USE GOOD QUALITY MATERIALS. BUY FROM REPUTED SHOPS. DO NOT BUY SECOND HAND GOODSSOME USEFUL TIPS: SOME USEFUL TIPS Copper choke TO Electronic choke Table Lamp for night study Bath rooms & Toilet : 25 W Bulb Going outside – To switch off the Main To save Rs 15 to Rs 30 per monthFANS: FANS Use light weight / energy efficient fans. Lubricate bearing of motor periodically. Use electronic regulators for fans.Slide 31: TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, WHEN NOT IN USE It may occasionally take you a few more seconds to get to work, but you'll save energy and money if you turn your computer off. It will also reduce wear and tear on your hardware, extending its life SWITCH OFF THE MONITOR, WHEN NOT IN USE ComputersSlide 32: If you have the choice between powering up your desktop or a laptop, choose the latter. Also, when it's time to upgrade to a new computer, think laptop . Laptop computers draw only 15 to 25 wat ts during regular use, as compared to the 150 watts used by a conventional desktop computer and monitor. Plus, laptops also draw just a fraction of a watt when in sleep mode. Laptop ComputerACTUAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY HOME APPLIANCES: ACTUAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY HOME APPLIANCESGRINDER: GRINDER Use energy efficient motors for grinders. Always use nylon belt in grinders. Use grinder to its full capacity. Clean and lubricate grinder parts periodicallyWashing Machine: Washing Machine Use the Washing machine with full load. When purchasing, choose the energy efficient one. Always switch it off from the plug point as the “stand by” mode still consumes power. Prefer a washing machine without drier. Avoid using the washing machine at peak hours. (6AM to 09.00 AM & 6PM to 09.00 PM)Slide 37: For every degree you lower the thermostat, you’ll save between 1 to 3% of power . IRON BOXSlide 38: Always use the Oven to its full capacity. Plan accordingly . Load & unload the Oven as quickly as possible to avoid heat loss. Always switch of the Microwave from the mains after use . MICROWAVE OVENWATER HEATERS: WATER HEATERS Use solar water heaters wherever possible. Avoid water leakage in taps / joints. Always insulate hot water pipes to reduce heat loss.Solar Water Heater: Solar Water Heater Life is about 20 years. It uses clean and freely available Solar Energy . No running cost and negligible maintenance cost. Gives supply of 100 liters at 60 o C – adequate for 2 bathrooms + kitchen .COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS SOLAR WATER HEATER: COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS SOLAR WATER HEATER Cost of Solar Water Heater = Rs. 14,000/- Electricity saved per annum = 1340 units (assume 2KW geyser used for 2 hrs. daily) (4 units x 335 days) Cost of Energy @ Rs. 2.20 / unit = Rs. 2948/ annum ( upto 600 units bimonthly) Cost of Energy @ Rs. 3.10 / unit = Rs. 4154/ annum (above 600 units bimonthly) Pay back period is 3.5 to 5 years.AIR CONDITIONER: AIR CONDITIONER Close Windows and Doors when the AC is ON. Keep ACs at 24 0 C. For each degree that is set above 22 0 C, you will use 3 to 5 % less energy. Set your window ACs with non digital display at “low cool” or “medium cool” instead of “high cool” Turn off your AC an hour before the usage. Clean AC filter often. This will save the energy and increases the efficiency.CONSERVATION WHILE COOKING: CONSERVATION WHILE COOKING Cover pans while cooking to prevent heat loss. Try one-pot cooking. Just before your food is cooked completely, turn off the oven or burner and allow the heat in the pot or pan to continue the cooking process for you. The less liquid and fat you use, the quicker the cooking time. Use pressure cooker. It really saves on energy . Don’t let the water to boil for more than required.PEAK HOURS : PEAK HOURS Avoid using high power in peak hour as far as possible. This can be done by avoiding washing machine, geyser, water pumps, TV, iron Box, Grinder, etc, at the peak hour. 06.00 AM to 09.00 AM & 06.00 PM to 09.00 PM AVOID STAND-BY MODE: AVOID STAND-BY MODE What most of us fail to realize is that every time we leave a plug point “ON” after switching “OFF” an electrical appliance from the machine button, power is still being consumed, in the “stand-by mode”. Make it a habit to switch off your appliances from the plug point; it saves an unbelievable 5% power. Don’t keep your computer monitors on “sleep” or “screen saver” mode as this consumes power as well.Slide 46: Sample calculation: A 11kw Motor being loaded 10kw and working for 8000hrs in a year - energy cost @ Rs.4/-per unit Existing Motor is measured to be 84% Efficient.
