Parables of the Kingdom :

Parables of the Kingdom J. Brian Tucker, Ph.D.

Parables of the Kingdom :

Parables of the Kingdom What are parables? Understanding the parables Parables and the kingdom The kingdom and the church Israel and the church

What Are Parables? :

What Are Parables? Main vehicles for Jesus’ kingdom teaching. Greek parabole, from Hebrew mashal – Figurative form involving comparison. Used in Jewish wisdom teaching. Meshalim = Proverbs.

What Are Parables? :

What Are Parables? Jesus teaches in parables (Mark 4:33-34). These are called “parables”: Proverb (physician heal yourself) - Lk. 4:23 Figurative saying (wineskins) - Lk. 5:36-38 Similitude (mustard seed) - Mk. 4:30-32 Story (tenants) - Mk. 12:1-12 (esp. 1, 12) Allegory (soils) - Mk. 4:1-9, (esp. 2, 11, 13)

What Are Parables? :

What Are Parables? “A metaphor or simile drawn from nature or common life, arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness, and leaving the mind in sufficient doubt about its precise application to tease it into active thought.” C. H. Dodd (1936: 16) Jesus’ parables are designed to “reorder the symbolic world” of his audience, to retell the story of Israel with a subversive twist (with regard to the Roman Empire). N. T. Wright (1996: 174-82)

What Are Parables? :

What Are Parables? Ideal for proclaiming “the mystery of the kingdom.” Something hidden that is now revealed (Wright 1996: 181). Not understood by everyone because not what they expected (Wright 1996: 181-82).

Understanding the Parables :

Understanding the Parables They aren’t always self-interpreting. Receptivity is everything. Mark 4:1-20 - a parable about parables. God is sending out his word to establish his kingdom, but in a surprising way. This is happening through Jesus’ ministry. Your own attitude is crucial to whether this message takes root in you or not.

Understanding the Parables :

Understanding the Parables They aren’t always self-interpreting. Receptivity is everything. Mark 4:1-20 - a parable about parables. Quotation from Isaiah 6:9: “So that” or “with the result that.” Jesus’ message brings a crisis of decision. You can learn the secrets of the kingdom if you ask.

Understanding the Parables :

Understanding the Parables Ladd suggests two principles: Parables convey a single truth (A. Jülicher). Jesus used a spectrum of forms? Multi-point parables created by church? The critical Sitz im Leben is Jesus’ ministry. Most today would say two life settings. Ladd is interested in Jesus’ kingdom teaching.

Parables and the Kingdom :

Parables and the Kingdom Parables of the kingdom (Mt. 13) = how the kingdom is working in the world. Works in a hidden, unexpected way. Starts small but will have far-reaching effect. Must be willingly received; must be sought. Is worth sacrificing everything else for. Will be mixed with the world (wheat/tares). Will draw in all sorts of people (dragnet). Will equip people with old and new treasures (householder).

Slide 11:

Parables and the Kingdom What difference might it make in our Christian lives or ministries to understand the NT concept of the kingdom of God?

Kingdom and the Church :

Kingdom and the Church How does the church relate to the kingdom? Kingdom = reign of God. Church = community of those who acknowledge his reign. Kingdom proclamation calls church into existence. Church preaches the kingdom. Church demonstrates kingdom life.

Israel and the Church :

Israel and the Church Did Jesus intend to found a church? Alfred Loisy: “Jesus foretold the kingdom of God, but it was the church that came.” Jesus’ followers misunderstood him. Dispensationalism: Jews rejected God’s kingdom.

Israel and the Church :

Israel and the Church Word ekklesia rarely used in Synoptics. Probably had sense of assembly of God’s people, as qahal in the OT. Jesus’ first disciples were Jewish, so Israel and the church are organically related. Jesus’ disciples were the righteous remnant of Israel, reconstituted or true Israel.

Israel and the Church :

Israel and the Church How would Jesus’ kingdom teaching affect how we think of the church and how we act as the church?
