Undocumented Immigration in California : Undocumented Immigration in California In 2006, there are 11,550,000 undocumented immigrants living in United States. California has the most number of undocumented immigrants. there are 2,830,000 which makes up 25% of the total undocumented immigrants in U.S. Slide 3: Mexico has the majority number of undocumented immigrants. Proposition 187 : Proposition 187 Was part of Save Our State (SOS) initiative. Passed in 1994 to deny undocumented immigrants from public benefits such as; social service health care public education It required to report suspected undocumented immigrants to Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), which is now part of Department of Homeland Security (March 1, 2003). Proposition 187 : Proposition 187 Passed by 1.4M votes Hispanic became more actively involve in politics after this issue. California became a solid Democrat State up until now. According to New York Times, “illegal immigrant workers in the U.S are now providing the system with a subsidy of as much as $7 billion a year.” Myth : Myth They take away our jobs. They do the most dangerous job that hardly any of us would do. Slaughter houses Industrial Farm Factories/Janitorial Re-construction of New Orleans Movers i.e. U-haul Construction i.e. Home Depot Myth : Myth Undocumented Immigrants get privilege in United States. They are vulnerable target for abuse. i.e. Sexual abuse, neglect in detention, racial discrimination and unreported physical abuse. Most don’t have proper representation. Exploitation in work environment. Lack of increase in wages. Low salary. Poor work environment. Lack of proper training and safety procedure.
