Safety Review : 

Safety Review ALWAYS USE CARE AND COMMON SENSE IN THE LABORATORY. CHECK THE LABELS OF ALL CHEMICALS FOR SAFETY WARNINGS BEFORE USING THEM: MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) LATAX (gloves); FORMALDYHYDE (preserving fluid); and PROPOLYNE GLYCOLE (holding fluid). WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR AT ALL TIMES BEFORE, DURING AND WHILE CLEANING UP SPECIMEN. LOCATE FIRST AID EQUIPMENT IN THE LABORATORY. CONFIRM ALL DIRECTIONS, PROCEDURES, AND OTHER INFORMATION WITH YOUR INSTRUCTOR BEFORE EACH ACTIVITY. MARK CHANGES OR ADDITIONS ON THIS PACKET. READ ALL “SAFETY FIRST” INFORMATION BLOCKS WITHIN THIS PACKET. AVOID CUTS AND OTHER INJURIES WHEN USING THE DISSECTION TOOLS. NOTIFY INSTRUCTOR IF ANY CUTS OCCUR. Day 1 Review safety procedures Directional terminology Identify external features and the particular functions of each feature Dissect a portion of the cerebrum to study the difference between white/gray matter anatomy Summary and Clean up Homework: complete lab procedure report

External Sheep Brain : 

External Sheep Brain Identify the subarachnoid Locate the cerebrum: functions: left side deals with right side of body; language. Right side deals with left side of body; perceptions of some auditory noises; better at visual spatial relationships; tactile) Bend the two hemispheres away from each other and observe the corpus callosum Function connects the two hemispheres together Study the surface of the cerebrum for the gyri, sulci, and fissures. Identify the lobes: Frontal lobes Parietal lobes Occipital lobes Temporal lobes Insula (buried within a fissure between the temporal and parietal lobes)

External Structures/Function : 

External Structures/Function Locate the cerebellum: Function: controls skeletal muscle; posture; functions below the level of consciousness for smooth movement Locate the diencephalon region: Hypothalamus which includes the optic chiasma and the optic nerves. functions as the reward/pleasure center pituitary gland functions as a major neuroendocrine gland that has numerous and important regulatory functions Thalamus, this is not viewed during external examination and we will identify this during a sagittal viewing of the brain Function: acts as a relay center for sensory impute to the cortex. emotions, arousal, pain, temperature, touch, but not olfactory better known as the limbic region

External Structure of Brainstem : 

External Structure of Brainstem Locate the brainstem Locate the midbrain function: deals with pupillary reflex and eye movement The small rounded body on the midline, nearest the cerebrum is the pineal body functions as the biological clock, houses melatonin Locate the pons function: pneumotaxic center to regulate breathing Locate the medulla oblongata Function: is the vital center. Also controls sneeze, hiccups, swallowing, coughing, vomiting

Summary : 

Summary Today we have review our directional terminology for quadrupeds which is different that bipeds. We have be able to tie our week long lecture of the brain with actually being able to touch, view, and manipulate a real brain During our identification we reviewed once again the function of each part Homework: as discussed previously, you are to construct your own Lab Dissection Procedure for the local 8th graders to be able to follow for today’s lab. To be turned in Wed. This will count as a test grade along with your performance assessment on you dissecting techniques.

Day 2 : 

Day 2 Review day 1 and safety procedures Midline dissection of brain to separate left/right brain Identify internal structures and function Identify the 4 ventricles and aqueduct Dissect cerebellum Summary and clean-up Homework: complete lab procedure report

Internal View : 

Internal View Utilizing a scalpel, cut the specimen along the midsagittal plane. Use the longitudinal fissure as a cutting guide

Identify internal structures : 

Identify internal structures Identify the corpus calosum Identify the left/right lateral ventricles. Identify the third ventricle. The lateral walls of the third ventricle are formed by the thalamus. identify the cerebellum and locate the arbor vitae, Ventral to the cerebellum, located the fourth ventricle which is connected to the third ventricle by the cerebral aqueduct. locate the pineal gland; optic chiasma; olfactory bulb and pituitary gland Locate the pons and medulla

Summary : 

Summary Today we have completed our dissection on the Sheep brain We have be able to tie our week long lecture of the brain with actually being able to touch, view, and manipulate a real brain During our identification we reviewed once again the function of each part Homework: as discussed previously, you are to construct your own Lab Dissection Procedure for the local 8th graders to be able to follow for yesterday’s and today’s lab. To be turned in Wed. This will count as a test grade along with your performance assessment on you dissecting techniques. Wednesday will begin “Sense organs” and then Cow Eye dissection. Be prepared for lecture and group discussions related to sense organs.
