P. 23) “As a new Vocational Rehabilitation counselor, I am realizing that we have a major role in assisting individuals with disabilities in securing suitable employment.”

To determine how I could become more efficient as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, I conducted a general survey where I asked a variety of general questions to see how people would respond.Many of the responses are similar…… :

1) What is a counselor in your own words? A person that helps people get what they need. Someone who guides and directs. Someone who evaluates.. Someone who gives advice and listens.. Someone who supports others in addressing issues. Someone you could go to for advice. A coordinator, scheduler, clerical, best friend and worse enemy depending on wants. Someone who works with clients towards a specific goal.

Empathy( on most every answer) Honesty Intelligence Conscience Firm yet lenient A listener Compassion supportive A communicator A critical thinker A problem solver A good observer Willing to work beyond their job description Have the ability to acknowledge the client/professional relationship

In conclusion, being a affective Vocational Rehabilitation counselor is short of a balancing act that entails providing a variety of services to assist people with disabilities in reaching a goal that is pretty much universal……
