DEFINITION:

It is a rupture or perforation of the eardrum. The eardrum receive vibrations from the outer ear & transmit them to the small hearing bones of the middle ear. DEFINITION

CAUSES:

Foreign bodies usually pointed objects Infection of the middle ear can cause ruptured eardrum. It can be caused by bacteria, virus or fungi .infection increase the pressure behind your eardrum stretching trauma the eardrum & causing pain. CAUSES

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS:

Pain Discomfort Hearing change or loss Fullness of ear Ringing sensation Blood tinged discharge from ear vertigo CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS

TESTS:

History of the patient Otoscopic examination Tympanogram – to note the pressure. Audiogram - hearing test TESTS

MANAGEMENT:

Antibiotics Decongestant Ear irrigation to remove debris Advise the patient to clean the ear & dry Analgesics MANAGEMENT

SURGICAL MANAGEMENT:

Tympanoplasty – it is the surgical correction of the perforated eardrum. In tympanoplasty a graft is placed to restore the damaged tympanic membrane. The location of draft depends on original defect – Type – I -: graft rest on malleus Type – ii -: graft rest on incus. SURGICAL MANAGEMENT
