SET includes: Sourced from http://www.ucpcfl.org/about-us/Engagement Activities: Engagement Activities Group led Fall Harvest Activity Club Planted pumpkin seeds Created fall related arts & crafts Read fall related poems & stories Carved pumpkins in groups Activity Club was held Monday-Friday from 12:30 to 1:15 Alternating between two 1 st grade classrooms.Participant Demographics: Participant Demographics First graders, 6-7 year age range Inclusive Classroom Disabilities present include: Cerebral Palsy Autism and ASD Behavioral disorders Emotional disorders Learning Delays Spina Bifida And more… According to section 300.8 of the IDEA, “Child with a disability means a child evaluated in accordance with §§ 300.304 through 300.311 as having mental retardation , a hearing impairment , a speech or language impairment , a visual impairment , a serious emotional disturbance , an orthopedic impairment , autism , traumatic brain Injury … specific learning disability …and who, by reason thereof, needs special education and related services.” Sourced from http://idea.ed.gov/download/finalregulations.pdfService in Action: Kate working with students on the “Big Book” Students drew pictures and decorated a large sheet of paper together to create their October Memory Big Book Service in ActionService in Action: Service in Action On a busy day, I demonstrate to the class how to carve a pumpkin. Each student gets an opportunity to come to the front and help dig out the goop. Another class works in groups to carve pumpkins, assisted by a teacher or group member. Students drew on facial features before we carved the pumpkins.Perceptions of Differences: Perceptions of Differences The experience I had working with our group at Bailes was a truly great one. Experienced a highly inclusive classroom How the class operates with such a multitude of disabilities and students without disabilities Students worked very well together and were not judgmental towards one anotherConnections to Your Course: Connections to Your Course This Teachers in Action project was completed as a group (except for this slide show) for EEX 4070: Teaching Exceptional StudentsCivic Engagement: Civic Engagement Volunteerism should be performed by all people Being civically engaged in the community is what holds that community together Creates a better understanding of one another and how to best work with people who are different from yourself Helps to solve society’s problems Service-learning is a win-win learning situation and should be implemented whenever possibleFinal Thoughts: Final Thoughts Take any opportunity possible to learn about others’ different abilities, lifestyles, and cultures Teachers should encourage inclusiveness and the value of helping others when teaching students and being involved with parents and communities You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
