INTRODUCTION TO LISTENING : 

Second part of the TOEFL exam Includes 2/3conversations & 4/5 lectures Tests your ability to understand spoken English Tests your competency in active listening, understanding speakers accent, making inferences, identifying relationships, vocabulary, taking notes etc INTRODUCTION TO LISTENING

STRUCTURE : 

Includes the following: 2 conversations between 2 people - 2students/a student & a professor, a librarian, a counselor, etc; followed by questions 2 lectures, followed by questions 2 lectures, with student comments & questions interspersed, followed by questions STRUCTURE

Slide 5: 

You need headphones for this test. adjust the volume during the test. take notes at any time & use your notes to answer the questions. notes will be destroyed before you leave the exam hall. Each question must be answered before you go to the next question. You can not go back to previous questions once you have left a question.

TYPES OF TOPICS FOR LISTENING : 

Two Types Of Listening Topics: - FORMAL INFORMAL Formal topics: -different fields of study in universities. Informal topics: - different problems & experiences of university students. No need to have special knowledge on topics. TYPES OF TOPICS FOR LISTENING

TYPES OF QUESTIONS : 

TYPE 1 :- choose one answer from four reasons asks you the reason of conversation /presentation EXAMPLE :- What is the lecture mainly about ? Why does the man want to talk with the woman ? TYPES OF QUESTIONS

TYPE - 2 : 

Choose 2/3 answers from 4-6 possibilities Type 2 questions generally ask details EXAMPLE :- According to the lecturer what are some of the characteristics of X ? According to professor what two results were reported in X ? TYPE - 2

TYPE -3 : 

A part of the lecture or conversation will be repeated Listen to a question along with the speaker’s statement Choose one among the four possible answers EXAMPLE :- Why does the professor say this : “ I trust you’ve already read the chapter so you’ll recall that a drainage pattern is the arrangement of channels that carry water in an area” TYPE -3

TYPE - 4 : 

Choose one among four options The options will be given on a picture The picture will be related to the topic Locate the specific part of the picture by selecting the options TYPE - 4

TYPE - 5 : 

Listen to the speaker briefly explaining a part of the text 3/4 statements from the text will appear on the screen Drag them in an order into the given table TYPE - 5

TYPE - 6 : 

Listen again to a part of speaker’s lecture 3/4 statements will be given with ‘y’/’n’ boxes Click in those boxes for each statement TYPE - 6

How can I better listen for basic comprehension? : 

How can I better listen for basic comprehension? Practice listening skills by asking yourself , “What main idea is the professor communicating?” Take good notes. Begin by writing the categories “main idea,” “major points,” & “important details” on different lines of paper. Listen carefully & take notes about each of those categories.
