Health Care:

Health Care Multitude of services rendered to individuals, families or communities by the agents of the health services or professions, for the purpose of promoting, maintaining, monitoring or restoring health. In many countries health care is completely or largely a government function. Medical care is a subset of Health Care.

Characteristics of Health Care Services:

Characteristics of Health Care Services APPROPRIATENESS- Is the service needed at all, in relation to essential human needs, priorities & policies. COMPREHENSIVENESS- service should be complete with a mix of preventive, curative and promotional services.

Characteristics of Health Care Services:

Characteristics of Health Care Services ADEQUACY- should fulfill the requirement or needs of people. AVAILABILITY- doctor population ration or health center coverage area. AFFORDABILITY- within the means of people and the State. FEASIBILITY- operational efficiency of certain procedures, logistic support, manpower & material resources.

Levels of Health Care:

Levels of Health Care PRIMARY Health Care- first level of contact between individual & Health System. Essential Care is Provided Most health complaints resolved here. PHCs and Subcentres do this function. SECONDARY Health Care First Referral Unit (FRU) Curative Services referred from FRU District Hospitals and Community Health Centers. TERTIARY – highly specialized care Planning & Managerial Skills Teaching for specialized staff.

Health Team Concept:

Health Team Concept Many functions of doctor can be performed by auxiliaries, given suitable training. Besides Doctors Health team has- nurses, pharmacists, social workers, health assistants, Trained Dais, Village Health Guides, ASHA, etc. Each team member has specific & recognized function and freedom to exercise their particular skill.

Health for All by the year 2000:

Health for All by the year 2000 Attainment of all people of the world by the year 2000 AD of a level of health that will permit them to lead a socially and economically productive life. Equity in Health- all people should have an opportunity to enjoy good health. This will reduce the disparity among rich & poor, urban & rural, and among various countries.

Primary Health Care:

Primary Health Care Concept came in 1978 in International Conference in Alma-Ata, USSR “ Essential health care based on practical , scientifically sound and socially acceptable methods and technology made universally accessible to individuals and families in the community through their full participation and at a cost that the community and the country can afford to maintain at every stage of their development in the spirit of self-determination”.

Primary Health Care includes at least:

Primary Health Care includes at least Education about prevailing health problems and methods of preventing and controlling them, Promotion of food supply and proper nutrition , Adequate supply of safe water and basic sanitation , Maternal and child health care, including family planning , Immunization against infectious diseases, Prevention & control of endemic diseases , Treatment of common diseases & injuries, and Provision of essential drugs Primary Health Care is the key to attaining HEALTH FOR ALL.

Millennium Development Goals 1-Eradicate EXTREME POVERTY & Hunger 2-Universal Primary Education 3-Promote gender equality & empower women 4-Reduce child mortality 5-Improve Maternal Health 6-Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria & other diseases 7-Ensure Environmental Sustainability 8-Develop a Global Partnership for Development
