As part of the Home Based Learning, you are going to learn a number of things about maps, mainly different types of maps and the cardinal directions for map reading. At the end of this session, you would have been exposed to various types of maps and also how to find directions from a specific location. Maps Maps are used to find your way around or to locate buildings and places. There are different kind of maps. Here are some examples.

Symbol - Centre of compass direction. It is placed at the point of reference from which you will be able to find out the locations of other places or things. Make sure that your north arrow faces the same direction as the north of the map or the given north.

Example: Where is tweety bird, hopping tiger, scary skeleton and dancing baby located from Bugsbunny? With reference from the north point at the bottom right corner, place the centre of the compass directions at Bugsbunny. Make sure that the north arrow of your compass direction faces the same direction as the north point given at the bottom right corner of the screen. North North South East West

EXTENSION Now that you have already learnt about maps and the use of cardinal points, let’s put it into practice. Your birthday is round the corner. You would like to invite your classmates to your house for a celebration. In order to ensure that your friends manage to find your house, you decide to sketch out a map to help them. Your task: Recall the route you take to school every day. Design a map base on the route, starting from your home and ending it when you reach school. Include the following: Buildings you walk past everyday Cardinal points Any other information that will help them find their way to your house You can refer to the example provided if you have any doubts.
