The four facets— Materials Techniques Elements of Art Principles of Design support the central facet—the content of the work of art. If the four facets are weak, they weaken the central facet. Strong technical and compositional decisions strengthen the viewer’s connection to the content. The Design Diamond : The Design Diamond Content of the Art : Content of the Art The content of a work of art includes its subject matter (recognizable images or words), the concept (idea), style, original purpose or function, genre of art, audience targeted, etc. Art work that focuses primarily on content is conceptual art. Foundations of a Piece of Art : Foundations of a Piece of Art The foundational decisions in making a work of art consist of Materials Elements of Art These are the most basic building blocks used in making art. Art Media : Art Media The media or materials used are an almost infinite list, including paper, pencil, charcoal, conte, paint (tempura, acrylic, oil), adhesives, found objects, clay, wood, photo paper, photo negatives, videos, fibers, fabric, thread, twine, time, etc. Principles of Design : Principles of Design The Principles of Design and artistic techniques build on the foundation. The Principles of Design are the ways the Elements of Art are used, applied, and organized. Techniques are the processes and ways the materials are used. Expressive Art : Expressive Art The expressive part of art making includes the materials and techniques. Process art work focuses primarily on materials and the ways they are used. Formal Art : Formal Art The formal approach to art includes the study of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Academic art work is concerned with the application of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, rather than expressing emotion.
