Analogies :

Analogies Understanding the Relationship K. Quiroz West – 001514083 EESL 545

What is an analogy? :

What is an analogy? An analogy is a type of word problem that consists of two word pairs. To solve the analogy you must find a word that correctly completes the second pair. At first glance, the words in an analogy may seem to have nothing to do with each other, but the words are always logically related. The first pair of words has a relationship similar to the second pair of words. To solve the analogy, you need to figure out that relationship.

Possible Relationships :

Possible Relationships

Example :

Example GRACEFUL : CLUMSY :: HOT : _______ Read the analogy like this: Graceful is to clumsy as hot is to ‘blank.’ Then ask yourself: What's the relationship between graceful and clumsy? These words have opposite meanings – they are antonyms – so the second pair of words must also be antonyms. Fill in the blank with a word that means the opposite of hot, and you’ve solved the analogy. The best answer is COLD.

Try It! :

Try It! Directions: The analogies below are word problems that consist of two word pairs. Look at the first pair and decide how the two words relate to each other. Then select one of the words below so the second pair of words have the same relationship. 1. LENS : CAMERA :: TREE : ______ What is the relationship? FOREST A lens is part of a camera. SHUTTER LEAVES 2. PRIVATE : PUBLIC :: CORRECTION : ______ What is the relationship? ERASE EDIT ERROR 3. BOLD : SHY :: COMPLIMENT : ______ What is the relationship? INSULT POLITE CONGRATULATE

Answers :

Answers LENS : CAMERA :: TREE : FOREST The best answer is FOREST. A LENS is part of a CAMERA. Therefore, in the second pair of words, one word must be part of the other. A TREE is part of a FOREST. 2. PRIVATE : PUBLIC :: CORRECTION : ERROR The best answer is ERROR. PRIVATE and PUBLIC are antonyms – words with opposite meanings. Therefore, the second pair of words must be antonyms. ERROR is an antonym for CORRECTION. 3. BOLD : SHY :: COMPLIMENT : INSULT The best answer is INSULT. BOLD and SHY are antonyms – words with opposite meanings. Therefore, the second pair of words must be antonyms. INSULT is an antonym for COMPLIMENT.
