In August of 2008, a large column of sand was streaming north from the Wildlife Refuge. But there was a
Major obstacle.
Slide 5:
At the largest & most intact groin on Plum Island, the Center Groin, the shoreline abruptly changes… Sand traveling North stops & gathers on the south side, while Sand Erosion occurs in the shadow of the groin… Groin Halts

Given how groins trap sand, were the sand indeed flowing south, there wouldn’t be an erosional void on the North side of the Center Groin… Rather, like an open catcher’s mitt, it would fill up with sand.
Slide 8:
When these two sources of sand meet & interact, the center’s void will fill with sand.
