The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.The National Honor Society: The National Honor Society The National Honor Society (NHS) premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character .The National Honor Society: The National Honor Society Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS.The National Honor Society: The National Honor Society NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, Canada, and Latin America. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.Four Pillars of National Honor Society SCHOLARSHIP . LEADERSHIP . SERVICE . CHARACTER : Four Pillars of National Honor Society SCHOLARSHIP . LEADERSHIP . SERVICE . CHARACTER Scholarship : Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 8.5 meet the scholarship requirement for membership. LEADERSHIP . SERVICE . CHARACTER : Four Pillars of National Honor Society SCHOLARSHIP . LEADERSHIP . SERVICE . CHARACTER Character: The student of good character is one who upholds the principles of morality and ethics; is cooperative and responsible; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and is a good citizen.Four Standards of Membership: Four Standards of Membership ♦ Scholarship – 8.5 GPA =30 pts. ♦ Leadership – 30 pts. from 3 different activities , i.e. clubs, sports ♦ Service – 20pts for service hours from 4 different activities ♦ Character - 20pts – evaluations by faculty and staffWhen are Students Eligible?: When are Students Eligible ? Students are eligible to be inducted into National Honor Society in 10th through 12th grade, which is done through a formal induction ceremony in the spring held by respective school chapters.What does a member of the NHS have to do once selected?: What does a member of the NHS have to do once selected? Each chapter shall have required regular meetings during the school year on days designated by the elected student executive committee ( President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer ) and in accordance with school policy and regulations.What does a member of the NHS have to do once selected?: What does a member of the NHS have to do once selected? Each chapter shall determine one or more service projects for each year. ALTAMIRA HIGH SCHOOL SERVICE PROJECTS: For 2010-2011 students are required to complete eight (8) hours of NHS service for the FALL SEMESTER and eight (8) hours of NHS service for the SPRING SEMESTER. Six (6) of the hours completed must be tutoring. The remaining ten (10) hours must fall clearly under the headings of Leadership, Character, Scholarship, and/or Community Service. According to the National bylaws, our service projects must directly benefit the school or community; have the support of the administration and the faculty; be appropriate and educationally defensible; be well planned, organized, and executed. Each member shall have the responsibility for choosing and participating in an individual service project that reflects his or her particular talents and interests. This is in addition to the chapter projects to which all members contribute. Each chapter shall publicize its projects in a positive manner. (i.e. newsletters / website) Candle Lighting Ceremony : Candle Lighting Ceremony The National NHS Council requires that induction ceremonies be appropriate and impressive. During the ceremony, candles can be lit to highlight the core values of National Honor Society (scholarship, character, service, and leadership).
