Using Data to Inform Instruction:

Using Data to Inform Instruction If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.

ATI Benchmark Data – 9th & 10th:

J Curve Growth Model:

The term J Curve is used to refer to J-shaped diagrams where a curve initially falls, but then rises to higher than the starting point. Used in mastery-type tests – scores are compared to a particular "cut score" or criterion e.g. percent correct Grades AIMS ( concept level data) J Curve Growth Model

The J-Curve Model and ATI: Preparing Students for a Comprehensive-Type Test:

A cumulative process: Students will not be familiar with some questions and that is okay – by end of the year, they should be familiar with most questions Test taking skills: Paramount to teach to students how to reason their way through unfamiliar questions Review and re-teach: Reviewing test items afterwards with students is key to success for subsequent BM assessments Student ownership of data: Assure students that they will show improvement with each test and that they should graph their own progress Test results as reflective of classroom instruction: Increased proficiency on each assessment should be directly related to curriculum content The J-Curve Model and ATI: Preparing Students for a Comprehensive-Type Test

Informing Your Instruction:

At your table group, open the envelope labeled Instructional Planning & Intervention Process Map. Take 2 minutes to work with your tablemates to complete the flowchart. Informing Your Instruction

Data-Driven Decision Making Process:

Data-Driven Decision Making Process Step 1: Collect and Organize Data Step 2: Analyze the Data Step 3: Interpret the Data Step 4: Plan to Take Action Data-Driven Decision Making Process WS

Analyzing & Interpreting the Data:

What do you notice about the data? What patterns or trends have emerged? What does the data say about student achievement? What about our current practices may be causing students to have these problems? Analyzing & Interpreting the Data

Ingredients for Effective Interventions in the Classroom (DIP):

Differentiation Examples: learning styles, differing levels of complexity, cooperative learning. Intensity Examples: flexible grouping, different levels of application, centers Performance Objectives Building curriculum by using a set of standards (examples: Arizona State Standards or Common Core) From RTI: Strategies for Secondary Teachers by Susan Gingras Fitzell Ingredients for Effective Interventions in the Classroom (DIP)

Providing Interventions:

The Modifications/Accommodations handout is a tool that lists possible interventions for your students. The interventions can be used both for students who have mastered the objective and students who have not mastered the objective . (helpful for documentation) Physical Arrangement of Room Lesson Presentation Assignments & Worksheets Test Taking Organization Skills Behavior Providing Interventions

The Final Countdown…:

The Final Countdown… Tier 1 - write one thing you would like to learn more about . Tier 2 – write two interventions/strategies you are thinking of trying in the classroom . Tier 3 – write three things you noticed from looking at your data.
