Crop Protection Management :

Crop Protection Management Crop protection is the branch of horticulture concerned with protecting crops from pests, insects, weeds disease and theft It encompasses: Pesticide- based approaches such as cover crops, trap crop and beetle banks Barrier-based approaches such as agro textiles and bird netting Animal psychology-based approaches such as bird scarers Biotechnology- based approaches such as plant breeding and genetic modification.

Cause of Crop Infection, PESTS :

Cause of Crop Infection, PESTS Field crops are infested with a variety of pests. A pest is any destructive organism which causes great economic loss by destroying crop plants or products obtained from them. These include weeds, insects, mites, rodents, fungi, bacteria etc… If these pests are not controlled at appropriate time then they can damage the crops to the extent of 50 to 70%

Methods of ControllinG Pests :

Methods of ControllinG Pests There are various methods by which insects and diseases can be controlled. The most common effective method is pesticide & biocide which include insecticide, weedicides & fungicides. These help in removing :-weeds, insects, mites rodents, fungi, nematodes, bacteria and other pests.

Preventive Measures … :

Preventive Measures … One should avoid the use of these toxic chemicals (pesticides) as they cause environmental pollution. Infact, it would be far better to use some preventive measures. Some of the preventive measures are: Use of resistant varieties Selection of optimum time of sowing the crops. Crop rotation and multiple cropping Clean cultivation Summer ploughing

Insect pest control :

Insect pest control

INSECT pest control :

INSECT pest control Many insects are serious pests of plants. They attack all stages, parts and products of plants. Insects attack the crop plants in the following ways three ways:- Chewing insects. The chewing insects destroy all sort of crop plants. They cut root, stem and leaf of crop plants by the help of their chewing mouth parts. Sucking insects. The sucking insects suck the cell sap from various parts of the plants. Internal feeders. The internal feeders live inside the plant parts. They eat the plants from inside.

Weeds are unwanted plants in the cultivated fields. In other words , plants other than crops are the weeds. Weeds take up all nutrients and reduce the growth of crop in various ways. Therefore, removal of weed plants from cultivated field in early stage of crop is essential to harvest high input returns in terms of high yield Harmful effects of weeds:-

Slide 13:

Types of weeds. Infestation of weeds is more during ‘kharif’, season than in ‘rabi’ season. Based on the morphology of plants, weeds can be classified into narrow-leaf weeds and broad-leaf weeds. Different types of Kharif weeds:- Nut grass, wild sorghum, chauli, saathi etc.. Different types of Rabi weeds:- Phalaris, wild oat, Chenopodium, Convolvulus etc… Types of

Methods of weed control… :

Methods of weed control… Mechanical methods. like uprooting, weeding, hand hoeing, interculture, ploughing, burning & flooding. Chemical methods. removing weeds using herbicides and weedicides. Cultural methods. they include the following methods: proper bed preparation, timely sowing of crops, intercropping and crop rotation. Biological control of weeds involves the deliberate use of insects or some other organisms which consume specifically weed plants.
