Premium member Presentation Transcript NANO SWITCHES: NANO SWITCHES PRAVEEN M BTE-09-043Introduction : Introduction In the last decade the idea of creating machines that work on the Nano scale has captured the imagination of many scientists . The simplest machine imaginable is a Nano-switch ; something that is extremely small and can switch an electric current on or off on the timescale of a few picoseconds.NANO SWITCH IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS: NANO SWITCH IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS A Nano switch in the domain of information technology is a device that has the capability to change between on and off states and is very small in size. Scientists at the University of Manchester have succeeded in creating a switch that is 10 atoms wide and 1 atom thick using a material called graphene. Graphene is a single layer of graphite which is a form of carbon and the substance used to make pencil leads.EFFICIENCY OF NANO SWITHCHES: EFFICIENCY OF NANO SWITHCHES Using Nano switches to make computers allows scientists to create devices the size of ordinary computers that run 1000 times faster. Current silicon chips are built with transistors that have a size in the range of a few micro meters. Nano switches are 1000 times smaller and could allow computer circuits to be 1000 times smaller .Nanotechnology switch with the qualities of RAM and hard drive : Nanotechnology switch with the qualities of RAM and hard drive B uilding blocks for memory devices were built with the help of telescoping carbon nanotubes something like high speed, low power micro switches. The designing would enable the use of binary or three stage switches in becoming a part of molecular scale computers. In this design a hollow Nano tube is inserted which is closed at both ends into a slightly larger one which created a telescoping motion with the aid of an electrostatic charge. A contact between nanotube and electrode leads to the creation of a conduction pathway with three possible positions.A NANO SWITCH: A NANO SWITCHNano-Switches in ‘Y’ shape: Nano-Switches in ‘Y’ shape "Electrons can stream through these nanotubes without any problems," said Apparao M. Rao, a physicist at Clemson University in South Carolina and coauthor of the study. Because the tubes are good at carrying a current, he said, "they're ideal for Nano-electronics ." Now researchers have cooked up tiny Y-shaped tubes of carbon that act like electrical switches. The new tubes could someday become the foundation for ultra miniature electronics.CONTINUED……….: CONTINUED………. The new carbon nanotubes are shaped like y 's and have small metal particles embedded at their junctions. The structure allows researchers to control the flow of electricity through the different branches.Light-activated Nano switches : Light-activated Nano switches Nanophotoswitches with very high on/off ratios exceeding 10 6 have been developed by scientists in China. The devices can be switched on and off using UV light – something that will be crucial for optical computing and data-processing applications in the future .Coherent opto-chemical and physical Nano switches : Coherent opto-chemical and physical Nano switches One of the prime features of such switches is that they can be triggered by chemical or biological substances or by variation of physical parameters of the environment such as heat.DRAWBACKS: DRAWBACKS Though the present problems with nano switches do not allow them to be used in practical integrated circuits, nanotechnology is the next realm of technological development .
