Premium member Presentation Transcript MAPEDIR: A Community Empowerment Instrument : MAPEDIR: A Community Empowerment Instrument MAPEDIR : MAPEDIR MAPEDIR is a verbal autopsy tool. It encourages community participation & strengthens the health system to tackle the risk of maternal death. It finds out the pattern of obstetric and socio-demographic variables related to maternal deaths. It aims to provide guidance on what needs to be done to prevent future deaths. THE DEADLY DELAYS… : THE DEADLY DELAYS… The First Delay is the delay in deciding to seek care for an obstetric complication. The Second Delay occurs in coordinating the method of transportation, resulting in a delay in reaching the care facility. The Third Delay is the delay in obtaining care at the facility. METHODOLOGY : METHODOLOGY MAPEDIR is organised at the block and district levels. A death notifier investigates community reports of deaths of women of reproductive age & submits the report to the block-level MAPEDIR team supervisor. MAPEDIR Team Supervisor assesses each report and assigns the suspected maternal deaths for a MAPEDIR interview. Slide 5: Two interviewers (1st the interviewer & 2nd the data recorder )and their supervisor comprise the block team. Death reports and completed MAPEDIR interviews are compiled and analysed at the district level with technical assistance from UNICEF. The Process : The Process Involves community participation through panchayat raj institutions, village health committees, self-help groups, NGOs. Sensitizing them to maternal & perinatal health issues. Identifying maternal and perinatal deaths through local reports. Slide 7: Conducting the maternal death inquiries by interviewing family members. Analysing and interpreting the findings. Sharing of data with the administration for prompt action and strengthening health systems. Sharing the findings with the community NGOs involvement to promote the development of effective evidence-based & need-based health interventions. MAPEDIR IMPLEMEMNTATION : MAPEDIR IMPLEMEMNTATION Making of a MAPEDIR interviewer : Making of a MAPEDIR interviewer Interviewers are selected from among ANMs, LHVs, ICDS supervisors or NGOs. Training for MAPEDIR interviewers spans three days. It is facilitated by district dignitaries such as the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), the UNICEF district consultant/extender, and state-level resource persons. Training sessions: Day 1 : Training sessions: Day 1 Introduction to MAPEDIR. Introduction to the state of maternal mortality in India, causes of maternal deaths, and the types of delays. Local perceptions and practices that cause maternal deaths. Slide 11: Birth preparedness and complication readiness – JSY, ASHA links. Introduction to verbal autopsy techniques, including the importance of the consent form. Slide 12: Participants are familiarised with the data collection instruments such as: Existing structures of maternal death notification and the desirable process. Maternal Death notification format. All Women’s Death Registration Format. Maternal Death Inquiry (MDI) format Day 2 : Day 2 Participants continue being familiarised with the MDI format. Practice sessions conducting maternal death inquiries through role-plays are held. Day 3 : Day 3 Participants revise what they had learnt the previous day and get more practice in administering the full questionnaire. Participants are sensitized about the ethical issues surrounding the interview process.
