One of the regular things I like to do is go to thrift stores, my favorite is Savers, I go on senior day to pass the time, others do the same. :

A few regulars congregate in front of the store, anticipating it's opening, saying hello and chatting, not knowing each others’ last name. :

A few of us are always there early, when it is nine, a lady from inside unlocks the door and holds it open for the first few. :

One day as I was entering the door a very tall man reached over my head and shoved the door open quickly, I almost fell, it shook me up too. :

As he pushed in he was muttering at all of us, old people make me sick, they are slow and in the way; they should just stay home, he was a loud nasty cad. :

As I composed myself from almost falling I looked around, others had also heard his remarks, I felt sad for them, but frankly, it made me mad. :

I guess I should have let it pass, but I could not, at times my fuse is a bit short, I am only four foot nine, I'm always short, but from him I needed a reply. :

Inside I stopped him and asked him why he was so rude, he snidely said, old people could have stayed in better shape, now it's too late to try. :

By now I was past angry, I asked him to explain, he said they probably drank, smoked or ate wrong, now they just blame everything on getting old. :

Now isn't that a hurtful thing to say sir, getting older does slow us down, but most have worked and still try to be useful, we are all still humans, so I've been told. :

See Mr. James there, he has Alzheimer’s, he comes with his wife, she can't leave him home alone, and Mary uses a cane due to an accident, Jack uses a wheel chair. :

Most here are older, we all try to keep going, we do not want to sit in a corner hiding our hurts and faces; getting out with others helps us fight our own despair. :

We laugh with Joe when he rides up on a scooter, he lost a leg in Korea, some are mentally challenged, a few of them work at this store; they were born that way. :

I had polio, was it my fault? I use a walker now and I am getting older, damn it, most here are proud seniors, a bit worn but sir, be kind, you may be slower someday. :

Yeah, yeah, that's what my father keeps telling me, you could get down too, that makes me mad; he has abused his body, now he tells me what not to do. :

But sir, maybe he is worried about your health, no, no he is old and stupid, he sits and broods, gripes too, but sir, maybe he is afraid of losing you, and being lonely too. :

Behind me I heard people talking, as I turned around, eight to ten people were smiling at me, I was embarrassed, and trying not to cry, as they looked my way. :

The man had stomped off bitching, later as he was leaving, I told him to come back someday, but sir, if you do not like older people, do not come again on senior day. :

Written by:Linda J. Hutchinson I too have aged and am a senior, all of my roads have not been easy, but I keep trying as others do, his words hurt deeply, but they will not destroy our dignity and pride. Me at 76 (with my son)
