BANKING INDUSTRY Banking system of a nation is the shadow of its economy. The Indian banking system is one of the largest banking network in the world. Banking in India originated in the last decades of the 18th century. The first bank was The General Bank of India which was started in 1786.

The oldest bank in existence in India is the State Bank of India. In 1949, the Banking Regulation Act was enacted which empowered the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) "to regulate, control, and inspect the banks in India.“ In 1969 government nationalized the 14 largest commercial banks. There are 27 public & 30 private sector banks in India.

“Credit appraisal of corporate borrowers” The process of evaluating an applicant’s loan request or a corporation’s debt issue in order to determine the likelihood that the borrowers will live up to his/her obligations. It can be done in following steps:

Bank credit rating strategy: Credit appraisal is the procedure followed by the credit granting agency for analyzing the credit worthiness of the borrower and his/her credit requirement. Financial analysis: Principal financial assessment data sources are made by secondary current account balances, off-balance-sheet details, time transactions, CBR statement of compliance, profit and loss statement, auditor’s report, annual report and other materials/documents/records holding any financial particulars related to the given bank.

Qualitative analysis: Qualitative research of business engagements pursued by a bank are generally made by providers of legal-related knowledge including terms of reference, licenses, founding charters, marketing information, annual reports, advertising and promotional materials, mass media reports, research surveys and questionnaires, bank’s top-manager interviews, etc.

2) Financial statement analysis Ratio analysis is a very important part of credit appraisal from financial analysis point of view. Liquidity ratios measure a firm's ability to meet its current obligations. Profitability ratios measure management's ability to control expenses and to earn a return on the resources committed to the business.

Leverage ratios measure the degree of protection of suppliers of long-term funds and can also aid in judging a firm's ability to raise additional debt and its capacity to pay its liabilities on time. Efficiency, activity or turnover ratios provide information about management's ability to control expenses and to earn a return on the resources committed to the business.

3) Assessment of loan requirement According to the applicant depending upon customer’s schedule of delivery requirement the working capital requirement can be of different level at different point of time. 5) Others terms & conditions Based on past conduct of accounts… {For existing customers}. Terms and conditions for the similar loans Additional credit facilities sanctioned Since last review. Details of excess drawings and irregularities Since last review They are laid down to monitor the accounts effectively and periodically.

6) Appraising officer’s views & recommendations Finally the appraising officer submits the proposal to his higher authority by recommending the sanction at proposed terms and conditions and rate of interest.

INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTANALYSIS : 

INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTANALYSIS Strengths ING as one on the biggest financial MNC. 7th in 500 fortune. Only foreign bank which has acquired an Indian private bank (Vysya Bank). Most of the financial plans are legalized under 80ccc. Unique features with different kinds of accounts. Weakness   Very few branches.   Less variety of financial/banking products.

EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENTANALYSIS : 

EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENTANALYSIS Opportunities     Increase in different kind of financial products.   NGO and Public Relations. Threats   Presence of two top private banking players in the market (ICICI & HDFC).   Large market share already captured.

LIMITATIONS : 

LIMITATIONS Limited scope. Time duration is of 45 days only, so much of economic fluctuations are not seen. No customer interaction.
