Ephesus

Slide 74:

Ephesus was a port city founded by colonists from Athens in the early 1000’s BC. The city became a major trading and banking center under the Greeks. Later Ephesus became the capitol of the Roman province of Asia. Situated on the Asiatic caravan route, the city was a bridge between East and West. Ephesus later was looted by the Goths, Arabs, Turks and finally the Mongols. The city became abandoned and lay deserted until archeologists uncovered it in the late 1800’s and they are still finding things today. The Library of Celsus kept 20,000 papyrus scrolls. It was the third largest library in the world at the time.

What we took away from Turkey.. :

What we took away from Turkey.. -Turkey is a strong & loyal ally of ours in a very volatile region. The Turkish people love, admire and respect us. They want us to strengthen their relationship with us. -Turkish people are very hospitable, warm and friendly. Mosques, minarets and five prayer calls a day. Where the many mosques now stand, there once stood churches… Is that a glimpse of the future ?

Slide 137:

Looking at and studying the people & events of the Bible in their original geographical settings and historical contexts was awesome. -“Walking" in the footsteps of Paul - Ephesus and the other Seven Churches - Hagai Sophia - The beautiful village of Sirance - The ruins of the Roman cities - The quaint old houses - The third & fourth grade students at Celtikci School - Turkish hospitality everywhere, our hosts, his family, the Rotarians & their families, the townspeople - “Living” with a Muslim family- Perhaps some seeds were planted HIGHLIGHTS

Slide 138:

CONCLUSION Turkey is full of fascinating religious and Biblical history -The on-site visit helped deepen our understanding of God’s word, enabling us to strengthen our relationship with Him

Slide 139:

CONCLUSION (Cont’d) Only a fraction of the archaeological sites have been surveyed, excavated, examined, documented, published, etc.. -Difficult to conceive how much human labor it took to build all the structures, and we only see a few of them now - Archaeology is the only thing definitely known from the biblical periods…except the Bible text itself.
