Most sites collect information about people visiting their sites in order to: Identify their site visitors in order to be able to contact them. To use the collected information in order to improve their site (according to the interests of their visitors). To use the information to send the user promotional information. To share the information with advertisers in order to identify the origin of the site visitors. To share with third parties for marketing and email lists. Slide 4: Privacy To protect yourself online: Use a nickname (username or nick) while chatting. When registering for a chat-room or newsgroups use a different email address than the one given to you by your ISP. Use a web-based email address like HOTMAIL or DI-VE mail. Read a website’s privacy policy before sending any personal information (we usually skip this part because they are too boring) Reject cookies that do not return to the original domain (same website) Give out personal information only to secured servers (you will see a padlock at the bottom right of your browser if the site is secure) To protect your data online: The only solution is ENCRYPTION. Software exists that scrambles your data so that it is illegible if picked by hackers in transit. This encrypted date is then unscrambled at the receiver end so that only the intended party can decipher it. Slide 5: Copyright Anything posted online is of PUBLIC DOMAIN – unless otherwise stated by the owner of the material – in such cases the material would be a demo or a trial version for which you would eventually have to pay. Nobody can tell you NOT to download things for his/her website. If they are online then they are not private anymore. There is nothing wrong in downloading material from the web. The material has been put there for that specific purpose. There is nothing wrong in copying text or images from websites as long as you cite the original source in your document. © Slide 6: Some students are at a disadvantage simply because they do not have internet access. Even though the government has given for free an email account to all Maltese students this is actually of little help because email is something private and there is very little privacy in the schoolnet system. Moreover they cannot use this email from home for the simple reason that they do not have an internet account. These still can help themselves by using internet facilities: In Libraries or Local Councils At Schools opening after school hours (not sure where this exists) At friends who have internet access especially when working in groups. Access Slide 7: Cultural Differences We live in a world where diversity reigns. It is fundamental to treat fairly all persons regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age and national origin. (especially during chat) Slide 8: Accuracy It is important to keep in mind that some sites may contain information that might be inaccurate or outdated! A user should look for the date the site was last updated and be aware of the person or organisation that posted the information online. Contact information on each page increases credibility. SO… Any information posted on the internet should be accurate in content, spelling and language and should be regularly updated. Users will stop visiting the site if this is not the case!
