Teen Pregnancy :

Teen Pregnancy “Teenage pregnancy rates have fallen as sex education and improved access to contraception has improved. Five per cent of Australian children are born to women aged 19 years and under. Teenage women have a higher complication rate during pregnancy and childbirth than older women.” Better Health Channel(2010)www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au

The topic – Teen pregnancy American teenager photo (n.d) – www.gosublogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/th. The secret life of the American teenager is a new show recently showing on Australian televisions. The show is about an average teenager that plays a French horn and falls pregnant the first time she has sex. The main character Amy has a hard time dealing with the pregnancy and her journey shows ups and downs and most of all people look at her differently because she is a teen mother. My presentation is for the middle secondary years.

Throughout the show is shows many different out comes of how different families from different cultures have reacted to the teen pregnancy. It shows how “Amy” deals with what people have to say and she has many choices to make that involve not only her but her un born child. On the show it shows Amy having her child and going back to school to complete her senior year. There is a lot of positive people around Amy and it helps get her through the hard times. :

Slide 5:

Statics show that more teenagers (between 14 – and up) are starting to want to explore the sexual side of having a partner and some of those teens do fall pregnant. Below on the graph it shows that numbers have dropped from the following years. Here is a graph showing where Australia sits in the world for teen pregnancies. Slide 8:

Imagine a world where everyone was the same, same hair colour, eye colour, skin colour, and everyone wears the same clothes and has children at the same age..... Who would want to live in a world like that???? NOT ME!

When you look around, the world is changing and everyone is different, it’s a good thing!! Everyone has their own believes and some don’t. That is why the world works... :

Part 2 – The Curriculum :

Part 2 – The Curriculum

Class Activity :

Class Activity Talk about the topic (teenage pregnancy), ask the class how many young people do that know that have had children in their teens. Also referring back to the television show that I discussed earlier. Does this show have an impact on the students?? As an activity divide the students up in groups and in the groups they are to identify some famous teens that have had a child. Also in the groups discussion what they think of teens that have children.

Class Activity :

Class Activity Bring the groups back so its a whole class activity. Ask each group one by one what they come up with, let each student give their opinion, either good or bad. Discussing the outcomes and the risks of falling pregnant. Also ask if the students understand the topic and let them ask the teacher questions that are relevant. Also make sure the students understand that if a student does fall pregnant its not the end of the world and as a class everyone needs to support and help her.

The students need to look at these people and see yes, they are different and yes it’s ok to be different. :

Teens and the baby bonus :

Teens and the baby bonus New mothers are entitled to the “Baby bonus” on the birth of their child. Some teens think about getting the money and not the baby. They spend the money on non-essential items instead of the baby. Since the baby bonus has come out they have changed the bonus for mothers under 18 with 13 instalments over 6 months. Some teens do think of the money instead of the baby bonus, but most think of a chance of helping set up a room for their child. Not everyone thinks like this information above.

Views? :

Views? Is this acceptable behaviour for school students? What does the rest of the world think? Different reactions from different cultures? Is this the image we want for our students? Should there be more rules and regulations put in place at school and home? All of these points are discussed in each individuals homes, either because someone at their child’s school has fallen pregnant or they saw something on the news.

Who can help and what actions need to be taken?? :

Who can help and what actions need to be taken?? Help is always available for students from either staff, councillors, doctors, family friends and family. The student has to ask for help, but they also need to know that people are there for them. They might be afraid to start with but reassurance and guidance is key. The teen needs to talk to the school they attend, see if they can finish their schooling years. If so what actions need to be taken to help the teen.
