INTRODUCTION:

INTRODUCTION A  lathe is a machine tool which rotates the work piece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation, facing, turning, with tools that are applied to the work piece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation. OR Lathe is a machine, which removes the metal from a piece of work to the required shape &size

Types of Lathe :

Types of Lathe Engine Lathe The most common form of lathe, motor driven and comes in large variety of sizes and shapes. Bench Lathe A bench top model usually of low power used to make precision machine small work pieces. Tracer Lathe a lathe that has the ability to follow a template to copy a shape or contour

Automatic Lathe A lathe in which the work piece is automatically fed and removed without use of an operator. Cutting operations are automatically controlled by a sequencer of some form Turret Lathe lathe which have multiple tools mounted on turret either attached to the tailstock or the cross-slide, which allows for quick changes in tooling and cutting operations. Computer Controlled Lathe A highly automated lathe, where both cutting, loading, tool changing, and part unloading are automatically controlled by computer coding:

Main parts of lathe machine:

Main parts of lathe machine 1 . Headstock- The headstock assembly is permanently fastened at the hand end of the bed . 2.Spindle - A  spindle  is a rotating axis of the machine, which often has a shaft at its heart. The shaft itself is called a spindle. 3.Bed -The bed is the base or foundation of the lathe.its supports the other parts i.e. headstock,tailstock and ca rrige etc. 4.Tailstock- The tailstock is located on the innerways at the right end of the bed.

Operations of Lathe Machine: :

Operations of Lathe Machine: i . Facing:  This operation is almost essential for all works. In this operation, as shown in fig., the work piece is held in the chuck and the facing tool is fed from the center of the work piece towards the outer surface or from the outer surface to the center, with the help of a cross-slide. ii. Plane Turning :  It  is an operation of removing excess amount of material from the surface the surface of the cylinder work piece. In this operation, shown in fig., the work is held either in the chuck or between centers & the longitudinal feed is given to the tool either by hand or power.

3. Step Turning: It is an operation of producing various steps of different diameters of in the work piece as shown in fig. This operation is carried out in the similar way as plain turning. :

(iv) Drilling : It is an operation of making a hole in a work piece with the help of a drill. In this case as shown in fig., the work piece, by rotating the tail stock hand wheel. The drill is fed normally, into the rotating work piece, by rotating the tail stock hand wheel. v) Reaming : It is an operation of finishing the previously drilled hole. In the operation as shown in fig., a reamer is held in the tailstock and it is fed into the hole in the similar way as for drilling.:
