What is the role of a citizen in times of need?:

What is the role of a citizen in times of need? Do they stand by and wait for help to arrive? Do they take an active role and provide help for themselves as well as others? Prepare ahead of time, and educate the community on how to be prepared for a disaster?

What Happens When Help Does Not Arrive?:

What Happens When Help Does Not Arrive? Hurricane Katrina. There is a need to be proactive. People helping People. Being educated, trained and prepared is necessary in order to help restore and rebuild communities.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT):

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) CERT is an organization set on educating people how to best prepare themselves and their communities against hazards and disasters. They also train citizens in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

CERT Continued.:

CERT Continued. CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Conclusion:

Conclusion Organizations like CERT are wonderful resources to a community. However, for those who do not actively participate in programs like CERT it is important to educate them on the importance of preparedness. If more citizens take control of their communities, and are willing to help…It will lead to a more well organized and successful response after a disaster strikes.
