HYBRID VEHICLES :

HYBRID VEHICLES by pawankumar

ABSTRACT :

ABSTRACT A hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to move the vehicle. Today the whole world is running out of power. Again the environment is also polluted to a great extent. To eliminate both the problems we can use the hybrid vehicals. This paper is all about the hybrid vehicals and its recent advances.

AIM :

AIM A Hybrid Vehicle can reduce the pollution to a great extent. It can also reduce the power consumption. The main aim of this paper is to make everybody aware of the hybrid vehicals. Another aim of this presentation is to see the recent trends in the Hybrid Vehicals.

SCOPE :

SCOPE The hybrid vehicles have a wide scope in the upcoming future. The main reasons of it are- Regenerative braking actually makes city driving more economical than on the highway. Fuel efficiency is greatly increased (twice). Emissions are greatly decreased. Dependency on fossils fuels can be decreased. Hybrids can be run on alternative fuels as well.

Why Hybrid Vehicles? :

Why Hybrid Vehicles? Emissions from vehicles is causing global warming and human sickness. Oil extraction peaked in the U.S. in the early 1970s. Oil extraction is peaking for the world about now. Natural gas extraction peaked in the U.S. in the late 1970s. Natural gas extraction for the world will peak within a decade or two. Hybrid vehicles produce much less emissions and use about 50% less fuel than the average new vehicle in the same class. (Partial-Zero emissions) Plug-in Hybrid vehicles eventually will be charged at parking locations using renewable energy. They will use at least half as much fuel as do hybrids.

Global-Warming: Still An Issue. :

Global-Warming: Still An Issue. Hybrids are not zero-emission vehicles. Will cut down emissions of global-warming pollutants . Later models may cut these emissions down by even more.

Hybrid technology is used in :

Hybrid technology is used in Two-wheeled and cycle-type vehicles mopeds , electric bicycles and electric kick scooters Heavy vehicles  railway locomotives, buses, heavy goods vehicles, mobile hydraulic machinery, and ships, and some form of heat engine Road transport, commercial vehicles Military off-road vehicles and also in Aircrafts and ships

Cars to come :

Cars to come GM: Chevy Pickup , Chevy Suburban . Daimler-Chrysler: Dodge Ram Pickup , Mercedes S-Class .

Electric Hybrids :

Electric Hybrids An electric car is powered by only a battery and a motor to improve efficiency although many people don’t like the idea of an electric car because of its limited driving range and there long recharging times. But as battery technology and energy storage improve auto makers are expected to begin a new generation of improved electric cars

Hydrogen powered cars :

Hydrogen powered cars Another way people are coming up with efficient hybrid cars is Hydrogen fuel cell cars. Unlike a regular car engine a fuel cell does not burn fuel and does not have many moving parts. A fuel cell works in this way, a chemical reaction takes place that converts fuel “that being hydrogen” into electricity which in return makes the motor run. And just like a common hybrid the fuel cell stores energy captured during braking and deceleration in a battery to further improve the motor’s efficiency.

Diesel cars :

Diesel cars A diesel vehicle uses an engine that has a different combustion cycle than a gas engine. Diesel uses a higher compression ratio and higher combustion temperature diesels operate more efficiently than a gas engine. A gallon of diesel contains ten percent more energy than a gallon of gas so there for it takes less diesel than it takes gas to do the same job.

Ethanol cars :

Ethanol cars Ethanol is a renewable energy source made from agricultural feedstock's. Since it is made from only organic materials it also has a lower pollution rate than a gas engine reducing emissions by up to 50 percent. Ethanol does have its draw backs such as its higher priced, makes less energy, and it is not as widely availability. But even with those draw backs it is still much better for the environment.

Advantages and disadvantages of the hybrids :

Advantages and disadvantages of the hybrids Some advantages of the hybrid car are the better fuel economy and the environmental fact of the lower emissions of the vehicle. But at the same time there are also disadvantages of having a hybrid car some of them are the higher prices on the cars and the lack of places and opportunities of getting the alternate fuels. Some of them also don’t have as much power as your average gas engine.

Slide 22:

Compared to the Hummer H3 model, the Toyota Prius has an estimated 48 mpg in the city & 45 mpg on the highway. The Hummer has an estimated 14 mpg in the city & 18 mpg on the highway.

Slide 23:

Cars that consume very little mpg , like the Hummer, increase the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, like carbon dioxide, present in our environment.

Slide 25:

Cars that burn fossil fuels such as gasoline emit toxic byproducts and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere while they are powered.

Slide 27:

Hybrid Cars release a small quantity of emissions during low speed city driving and traffic jams.

Slide 28:

According to David Friedman, a research director for the Clean Vehicles Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, “If every new car and truck in America used [second generation] Prius-like technology, we could more than double the fuel economy of our vehicles and save nearly three times more oil than we currently import from the Persian gulf by 2020.”

Slide 29:

A hybrid car cuts emissions by 25% to 35% over even the most fuel efficient gas powered models.

Slide 31:

The brand new hybrid car from Honda: 2010 Insight.

Slide 32:

Future Hybrid Cars

Slide 33:

Experts believe that hybrids are a transition technology. Hydrogen or methane fuel cell powered cars are most likely the cars of the future. As for the environment, there are several ways that people can decrease emissions. For example, people can buy a smaller, fuel efficient car, use public transport, car pool, ride a bike, and the simplest of them all - walking.
