What is Global warming ? : 4 What is Global warming ? Global warming -- a gradual increase in planet-wide temperatures Earth has been hottest in at least 400 years, and possibly even the la`st 2,000 years. Studies indicate that the average global surface temperature has increased by approximately 0.5-1.0°F (0.3-0.6°C) over the last century. This warming is largely attributed to the increase of greenhouse gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere IPCC Report states .. : 5 IPCC Report states .. Global warming is now “unequivocal” and that human activity “very likely” has been the primary cause of rising temperatures worldwide since 1950. The report summary also says that global warming is likely to continue for centuries, and that it is already too late to stop some of the serious consequences it will bring—even if mankind could somehow hold the line on greenhouse gas emissions worldwide starting today Slide 6: 6 GREEN HOUSE GASSES : 7 GREEN HOUSE GASSES The gas traps heat more effectively than all other gasses are known as Green house gasses, occur naturally in the environment and also result from human activities. These gasses are Water vapor Carbon dioxide Methane Nitrous oxide Slide 8: 8 IMPACT OF GLOBAL WARMING Slide 9: 9 As per scientists’ prediction the warmed world will be more humid & hot which will result in more water evaporation from earth Humid weather will enhance rainfall but with change pattern & high intensity Storm will be more strong & frequent Weather pattern are suspected to be less predictable and more extreme CLIMATE Melting Ice in the Arctic : 10 Melting Ice in the Arctic 1980 2002 2003 2004 Slide 11: 11 Sea level world wide rose 10-20 cm in 20th century In 21st century IPCC predicts a rise of 9 to 88 cm . It will submerge 6% of Netherlands, 17.5% of Bangladesh and many Island will disappear. SEA LEVEL Slide 12: 12 AGRICULTURE Increase in temperature may cause a pole-ward Shift of agricultural zones and shift in growing seasons. Equatorial zones, where agriculture is generally unproductive now, will deteriorate further. In many areas currently fertile, like parts of south America, New Zealand, and Southern Africa, condition are Predicted to become more arid and crop yields to become more marginal. Slide 13: 13 Animal and plants will find it difficult to escape from or adjust to effect of warming because of less availability of space already occupied by human populace. ANIMAL Approximately 20-30% of plant and animal Species assessed so far are likely to be at greater risk of extinction if increases in global Average temperature exceed 1.5 to 2.5 Celsius. Slide 14: 14 As per IPCC more people will get sick or die from heat stress due to warmer nights Today 45% of world population is affected by mosquito carrying parasites. The percentage may increase to 60 if temperature rise rate remains same till 2030. Other diseases e.g. dengue fever, yellow fever and encephalitis will increase rapidly Allergies & respiratory disease grow as warmer air grows as it will be more charged with pollutant G L O B A L W A R M I N G HUMAN HEALTH Slide 15: 15 EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING ON INDIAN CONTEXT G L O B A L W A R M I N G Slide 16: 16 30% DROP IN PER CAPITA WATER AVAILABILITY BY 2030 FOR INDIANS AS GREAT DRYS BECOME FREQUENT Slide 17: 17 COASTAL CATASTROPHE :- SEA LEVEL WILL RISE 40 CM HIGHER BY 2100 AND 50 MILLION PEOPLE IN COASTAL INDIA WOULD BE DISPLACED BY FLOODING G L O B A L W A R M I N G Slide 18: 18 Wheat production will fall by 17% in India if the temperature rise by even half-a degree centigrade Slide 19: 19 THE HIMALAYAN GLACIERS MAY TOTALLY DISAPPEAR CAUSING CATASTROPHIC DISRUPTION Slide 20: 20 THE GLACIER MELTDOWN WILL FIRST RESULT IN RIVERS BEING FLOODED AND THEN DRYING UP. THE GANGA DELTA WOULD TURN INFERTILE Slide 21: 21 WARMER OCEAN TEMPERATURE WOULD LEAD TO BLEACHING AND DESTROY VAST TRACTS OF INDIAN CORAL REEFS OCEAN ACIDIFICATION WOULD LEAD TO SHELL DISSOLUTION, SEVERELY IMPACTING MARINE LIFE AND FISHERIES RISE IN SEA LEVEL : 22 RISE IN SEA LEVEL Slide 23: 23 25% AMOUNT OF FLORA & FAUNA IN INDIA WOULD EXTINCT BY THE YEAR OF 2030. RemedyWhat can I doas an individual? : 24 RemedyWhat can I doas an individual? Slide 25: 25 whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Reuse & Recycle Useless Heat and Air Conditioning : 26 Useless Heat and Air Conditioning Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. Change a Light Bulb : 27 Change a Light Bulb CFLs last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat. If every family in India replaces one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 900 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking 27.5 million cars off the road. Drive Less and Drive Smart : 28 Drive Less and Drive Smart Less driving means fewer emissions. When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the environment . Buy Energy-Efficient Products : 29 Buy Energy-Efficient Products Home appliances now come in a range of energy-efficient products Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can't be recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Plant a Tree : 30 Plant a Tree If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging.. They are there to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. Use the "Off" Switch : 31 Use the "Off" Switch Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need. And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them. As an organization : 32 As an organization Change technology: improve efficiency use green energy Utilize renewable energy Slide 33: 33 THINK CLEAN, THINK GREEN! Outer nature is a reflection of Inner nature Inner Harmony is essential for outer Harmony Root of the crisis lies in False identity of Self Slide 34: 34 A Planet-Devastated A Planet- Peaceful Choice is OURS What We Want ? or Thank You : 35 Thank You LETS DREAM AND WORK TOGETHER FOR A PLANET THAT OUR FUTURE GENERATION CAN CHERISH Life is a Gift from God, and how I make it – is a gift to God -Nidhi Rani You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
