Anti-gambling bishop hopes new DILG chief will crack down on jueteng :

Anti-gambling bishop hopes new DILG chief will crack down on jueteng The appointment of Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo as Interior Secretary should boost the campaign against the illegal numbers game jueteng, a senior Catholic Church official said Saturday.Retired Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz said Robredo is “the right man" for the job because he is “competent and effective" in public service.“Our advocacy against jueteng has valuable ally in his person and conviction. He’s a no-nonsense executive in terms of honesty and integrity," Cruz said in an article posted Saturday night on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines news site.

Robredo, who was officially named by President Benigno Aquino III on Friday to head the DILG, will also supervise the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. Robredo earlier said the Aquino administration would not tolerate the conduct of jueteng because it is illegal, and it "develops a culture of mendicancy and corruption among our constituents as well as government officials."The underground multi-million-peso jueteng operations have for years been the major source of revenue for corrupt local politicians, the CBCP added.—JV, GMANews.TV

Dow ends week up 5.3 pct, its best gain in a year :

Dow ends week up 5.3 pct, its best gain in a year NEW YORK – The stock market ended its best week in a year with another gain Friday as investors bet that companies will report strong second-quarter earnings. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 59 points, or 0.6 percent. That gave the Dow its biggest weekly advance in a year, 5.3 percent. Broader indexes posted bigger gains. Trading volume was light, signaling that many investors were staying out of the market. But those who were trading appeared optimistic about the company reports that will be announced starting next week.

Slide 13:

Stocks also got a lift from news that China renewed Google's license to operate in the country. The renewal was in doubt because of a strained relationship between the company and China's government over censorship of search results. Google rose 2.4 percent. Friday's modest moves weren't surprising. Traders often avoid making big bets just before earnings releases because the reports provide a good picture of how companies are performing. Investors will look closely at forecasts for future quarters because economic reports in the past two months have raised questions about the pace of the rebound.
