Mrs Herrity’s Great Uncle, Charles Crutchley fought in the front line trenches of World War I. He fought in the machine-gun company (136 th Indian Division) in modern day Iraq against the Turkish Army. He had to go ‘over the top’. He wrote a book on the terrible experiences of the machine gun corps.

PowerPoint Presentation:

It was almost midnight when we captured and occupied a section of the Turkish trenches. It was then I saw “Johnny Turk’’ horribly wounded in the stomach. No medical attention was possible. I will never forget his screams and cries for water. Another British soldier gave him a drink out of pity. He smiled to express thanks and clutched the kind soldier’s hand. His enemies had become his friends. He slowly sank back and died in the arms of his supposed enemy. He was buried alongside several of our lads In death they were enemies no longer.

and visited the Northampton War memorial every year He also wrote a pamphlet on the importance of Remembrance Day

PowerPoint Presentation:

To me - a front line soldier for 4 years in World War I Remembrance Day is something sacred… it must act as a warning…. and pinpoint the futility (pointlessness) of war. In this atomic age it is more vital than ever before that the message of remembrance is passed on. Charles Crutchley 1964

PowerPoint Presentation:

Charles Crutchley 1964 The First World War was supposed to be a war to end all wars and for a time everyone believed this…. But… 20 years later war broke out again in the second world war… and wars are still happening today!

PowerPoint Presentation:

The First World War began in August 1914 All across Europe, young men clamoured to join up

PowerPoint Presentation:

Encouraged by patriotic propaganda and a sense of duty

PowerPoint Presentation:

And unaware of the horrors they were about to face…

PowerPoint Presentation:

Bloody battles were fought around the world In the French battlefields around Flanders, the Somme and Verdun thousands of young men lost their lives

PowerPoint Presentation:

The grave of a British soldier He was 15 years old

PowerPoint Presentation:

Blood red poppies were the only thing which grew each spring on the churned up battle grounds of France in the First World War. In 1915 a Canadian soldier, John McCrae wrote about it this his poem, ‘In Flanders fields the poppies blow’ Between the crosses, row on row…

PowerPoint Presentation:

This is why we lay poppies on 11 th November to remember the sacrifice of those soldiers who have died in war and those who are fighting still

PowerPoint Presentation:

‘They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun And in the morning We will remember them’      From ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon

PowerPoint Presentation:

In the 2 minutes silence today think about: those who have given their lives so we can live in freedom Those who are still fighting for peace in other countries today how we can work for Peace today and in our future
