What is typhoid fever?:

What is typhoid fever? Typhoid is a bacterial infection caused by the bacteria  Salmonella typhi . That can lead to- High fever, Gradually increasing over several days up to 104◦F Diarrhea, Vomiting, Rashes consists of rose-colored spots


Other symptoms can include: Weakness Abdominal pain Constipation Headaches Confusion

Treatment :

Treatment Fluroquinolones Ciprofloxacin Ofloxacin levofloxacin Cephalosporin Ceftriaxone Cefoperazone Cefotaxime Azithromycin


Fluroquinolones Ciprofloxacin is a first choice It quickly subsides fever in 4-5 days & other symptoms It prevent the relapse & complication It prevent carrier state Due to cidal action Good penetration into infected cells High biliary & intestinal mucosal concentration It achieve 92% eradication rate Dose: 750 mg BD for 10 days or 200 mg iv BD


Ceftriaxone Currently this is most reliable & fastest acting bactericidal Children, pregnant women, FQ resistance It prevent the relapse & carrier state Dose: 4 g daily iv for 2 days followed by 2 g/day after fever subsides (children 75 mg/kg/day) It is expensive


Azithromycin It is second line alternative in MDR typhoid fever Dose : 500 mg OD for 7 days

Other drugs Chloramphenicol Ampicillin /amoxicillin Cotrimoxazole
