FREUD :

FREUD Freud was founder of psychoanalysis. new approach to the understanding of the human personality. Freud theory that humans have an unconscious in which sexual and aggressive impulses are in perpetual conflict for supremacy with the defenses against them

PowerPoint Presentation:

. In 1923, he published 'The Ego and the Id', (new structural model of the mind, divided into the 'id, the 'ego' and the 'superego‘).

EGO AND ITS DEFENSES:

EGO AND ITS DEFENSES ID EGO SUPEREGO THE EGO AND ITS DEFENSE MECHANISMS

THE ID:

THE ID According to Freud, id is the source of all psychic energy. primary component of personality. driven by the pleasure principle which strives for immediate gratification of all desires, wants, and needs. For example, an increase in hunger or thirst should produce an immediate attempt to eat or drink.

THE EGO:

THE EGO Its responsible for dealing with reality. Ego develops from the id and ensures that the impulses of the id can be expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world. The task of ego is to ensure the health and safety of personality .

THE SUPEREGO:

THE SUPEREGO It provides guidelines for making judgments. It holds all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from both parents and society our sense of right and wrong . There are two parts of the superego :

PowerPoint Presentation:

The ego ideals includes the rules and standards for good behaviors. These behaviors include those which are approved of by parental and other authority figures. The concisions includes information about things that are viewed as bad by parents and society.

EGO AND ITS DEFENSES:

EGO AND ITS DEFENSES ego deals with the demands of reality the anxiety becomes overwhelming, the ego must defend itself. When the ego has a difficult time making both the id and the superego happy, it will employ one or more of these defenses. These are called Ego Defenses Mechanisms.

PowerPoint Presentation:

DENIAL Denial is the unwillingness to accept an event that disturb the ego DISPLACEMENT Taking out impulses on a less threatening target. Someone who is frustrated by his or her superiors may go home beat up a family member. INTELLECTUALIZATION Intellectualization works to reduce anxiety by thinking about events in a cold, clinical way.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Its allows us to avoid thinking about the stressful, emotional aspect of the situation and instead focus only on the intellectual component. PROJUCTION Placing unacceptable impulses of your onto someone else. RATIONALIZATION Rationalization is the cognitive distortion of "the facts" to make an event or an impulse less threatening.

PowerPoint Presentation:

REACTION FORMATION Taking the opposite belief because the true belief causes anxiety REGRESSION Returning to a previous stage of development SUBLIMATION unacceptable impulses or idealizations are consciously transformed into socially acceptable actions or behaviors.

PowerPoint Presentation:

SUPPRESSION The effort to hide and control unacceptable thoughts or feelings Sometimes we do this consciously by forcing the unwanted information out of our awareness EXAMPLE Trying to forget something that causes you anxiety OTHER DEFENSE MECHANISMS

PowerPoint Presentation:

ISOLATION Isolation defense mechanism of partitioning, or separated anxiety arousing parts of a situation from the rest of the psyche ACTION OUT The individual copes with stress by engaging in actions rather than reflecting upon internal feelings. RATIONALIZATION Justifying one's behaviors and motivations by substituting "good", acceptable reasons for these real motivations Examples I always study hard for tests and I know a lot of people who cheat so it's not a big deal I cheated this time

PowerPoint Presentation:

HUMOR Pointing out the funny or ironic aspects of a situation. Example A person's treatment for cancer makes him lose his hair so he makes jokes about being bald. UNDOING A person tries to 'undo' an unhealthy, destructive or otherwise threatening thought by engaging in contrary behavior. An example of undoing would be you have feelings of dislike for someone so you buy them a gift WITHDRAWAL: Withdrawal is a more severe form of defense. It entails removing oneself from events, stimuli, interactions, etc… that could remind one of painful thoughts and feelings.
