What is it? Decision making technique developed by Edward De Bono Looks issues from multiple angles Helps take right decisions Keeps you away from habitual decision making styles Able to understand all aspects of a decision Overall quality of decision goes up

Human errors in decision making : 

Human errors in decision making Most of us have our own decision making styles Thus we may not take into account all aspects of the subject matter before deciding. As a result we are likely to take lot of wrong decisions. Use of Six thinking hats can overcome such decision problems.

Where and how to use the hat? : 

Where and how to use the hat? It is to be used in decision making or problem solving situations It can be used in individual decision making Use caps one after the other in individual decisions It can be used in group decision making Rotate the caps among members one colour after the other Bear in mind what is to be done by wearing hats of different colours

The White Hat : 

The White Hat Focus on data/facts See what inferences can be drawn from the data Look for missing data and ask for it Compare with past data Analyse the data See the theme emerging from data analysis

Red Hat : 

Red Hat Look at the human side of decision making Look at the decision by intuition, gut reaction, and emotion Think how other people may react emotionally

Black Hat : 

Black Hat Look at the problem with pessimism Suspicion Caution Examine how it is likely to fail Highlight the weak points Look at the risks and fatal flaws Prepare contingency plans

Yellow Hat : 

Yellow Hat Think positively Have optimism Spot the possible opportunities It helps you to move ahead when every things looks gloomy

Green Hat : 

Green Hat Use creativity Think beyond imagination Set aside traditions Consider novelties

Blue Hat : 

Blue Hat Follow rules and procedures Avoid deviations Set new rules Control the processes

Summary Most of us look at the decision issues from our own perspectives We are likely to take wrong decisions by not looking at the problem from other angles The analytical aspects in decision making are Data/facts Feelings/ emotions Rules/ procedures Creativity/ novelty Positive aspects/ opportunities Negative aspects/ risks
