Slide 104:The Portrait Process


1 :1 Create shapes and tones with transparent washes of color, based on a light sketch made from a combination of elements from several photos.


2 :2 Add layers of soft color to the areas around the figures and redraw the critical contours and shapes with deeper values.


3 :3 Continue to define each subject with more detail and depth of color, leaving the white of the paper exposed in all the areas intended to remain light.


4 :4 Focus on the facial features and the details in clothing, reassessing the color palette being created in the painting.


5 :5 Refine the likeness in each of the subjects, adding detail and rich color to the most important parts of the composition.
