In the not so distant past, HR professionals were the few unlucky souls whose job profile included miscellaneous administrative jobs and other sundry tasks that no one wanted to do. It was more or less a thankless job where no bouquets or accolades could be expected. WHAT HR IS NOW? : WHAT HR IS NOW? Today, HR has emerged as a profession in its own right, with more and more people electing to pursue a career in the field. In fact, this field has evolved to such an extent that today organizations in India actually have the option of either meeting their human resource needs in-house or even outsourcing services if and when they choose to. HR is defined today is as an umbrella term that encompasses Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. The Changing Environment of Human Resource Management : 4 The Changing Environment of Human Resource Management The Changing Environment of Human Resource Management : 5 The Changing Environment of Human Resource Management Globalization; tendency of firms to extend their sales and manufacturing to new markets abroad Technological advances; technology has been forcing and enabling firms to become more competitive (skilled employee, empowerment) The nature of work; Human capital(knowledge, education, training, skills and expertise of a firm’s worker) provides competitive advantage The workforce diversity; increased diversity provide challenges for HR management Major Activities Conduct by HR : Major Activities Conduct by HR Recruiting Training Selecting Evaluation Compensation Motivation Recruiting & Selecting : Recruiting & Selecting Process of locating, identifying, and attracting capable candidates. Can be for current or future needs. What sources do we use for recruitment. Training : Training Training tends to be done for current job. Aims to improve efficiency. Keeps the employee up to date with changes in the field Motivation : Motivation Motivating employees to perform up to their potential is the key to maintaining a productive, successful business. Interact - Talk to your employees regularly. Recognition & Appreciation - A job well done should be appreciated and encouraged. Evaluation : Evaluation Establishing performance standards and reviewing the performance. To identify employees who are performing well and those who aren’t. Compensation : Compensation Incentive Compensation can be Commission, Bonus and stock options.
