Diversity of Regional Terms The United States is composed of many different regions. Regional names may be different. For example, the Great Plains may also be called the Midwest. There is no “one and only” regional name for each state.

Five Physical Regions: 

Five Physical Regions From Sea to Shining Sea

Coastal Plains: 

Coastal Plains Atlantic Coastal Plain Borders the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Florida. Gulf Coastal Plain Hugs the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Texas.

Appalachian Mountains: 

Appalachian Mountains Curves west along the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Second largest mountain range in North America. Runs from eastern Canada to western Alabama. Oldest mountain range on the continent.

Interior Plains: 

Interior Plains Central part of the country. Eastern region called Central Lowlands. Thick forests,broad river valleys, rolling flatlands, and grassy hills.

Rocky Mountains: 

Rocky Mountains Largest mountain range in North America. Stretches from Alaska to Mexico. Higher than the Appalachian Mountains.

The Pacific: 

The Pacific Forms western border of the United States. Two major mountain ranges : Sierra Nevada's and Cascade Range. Alaska and Hawaii part of region. Landforms: glaciers, islands, bays, plains, mountains, lowlands, plateaus,and fertile valleys.

Climate Regions: 

Climate Regions Climate differences are caused by the country’s huge size, changing elevations and the flow of its oceans and wind currents.

Mid-Latitude Climates: 

Mid-Latitude Climates 1. Humid Continental Winters cold and moist; summers long and hot. Humid Subtropical Winters mild and cool; summers hot and humid. 3. Marine West Coast Mild-year around. 4. Mediterranean Dry, warm summers; rainy, mild winters.

Dry Climate: 

Dry Climate In plateaus and basins between Pacific mountain ranges and Rockies. Region dotted with deserts. (ex. Great Salt Lake Desert, Black Rock Desert, and Death Valley. Great Plains: summers hot and dry; winters very cold.

High Latitude Climate: 

High Latitude Climate Highland Mountains in western part of contiguous United States. Subarctic and Tundra Alaska only Arctic Circle: winters bitterly cold; summers cool.

Tropical Climate: 

Tropical Climate Hawaii and Florida (southern tip) Warm temperatures and plenty of rainfall.
