How do you evaluate online resources? There are several areas to look at when evaluating online resources. Authority Accuracy Objectivity Currency Coverage

Authority: is the source of the information Accuracy: is the truth, correctness or exactness of information Objectivity: information not subject to personal feeling or interpretations Currency: is the information up to date Coverage: does the information cover the topic

Taking a closer look at authority Looking at the little pieces: Look at the URL (the address of the resource) for example: http://www.ustreasury.gov Look at the domain (the owner of a website) for example: .edu, .com, .ac.uk, .org, .net

How do you know it is accurate? : 

How do you know it is accurate? Does the web site have an editor? Are there any errors in the reading? Is the information reliable?

Is this resource objective? : 

Is this resource objective? Does the page have advertisements on it? For example, two for the price of one Sale starts Monday Is the information written from a persons point of view. I like or dislike In my opinion

Is the information current and up to date? : 

Is the information current and up to date? The date on the web page is current. When was the web page last updated? Do all of the links work on the web page? In other words, does a different web page up load when a link is clicked or does the link give an error message?

What are the topics covered? : 

What are the topics covered? Is the topic being searched actually on the web page? Is the information on the web page unique? Is the material in depth for the topic being researched?

REVIEW : 

REVIEW What or who is the authority on a web page? Why does accuracy matter when doing research on the internet? Does a good web site show objectivity? Why? Why does a web page need to be up-to-date or current? Why does the information on a web page need to have thorough coverage on a topic being researched?

Which site has more authority? Answer: www.nasa.gov First, because the site ends with .gov which stands for government. Second, because wikipedia.com can be changed by anyone at anytime. Third, because NASA’s web page author is Brian Dunbar and is located on the bottom of the web page.

Which web site has more Accuracy? Answer: www.nasa.gov NASA has a web page editor to verify the reliability and to ensure users have error free reading. The web page editor is Jim Wilson and the information is located at the bottom of the web page.

This web site is focused on educating the citizens of America on how to eat health. www.eatrightamerica.com is a web site that focuses on a specific diet. The site offers products for sale to serve their users.

It does not offer additional links to offer more resources from one location.
