Interviewees:

Interviewees Mr. Ted Newman Former US Army Battalion Executive Officer Current Department of the Army Test and Evaluation Specialist Mr. Scott Waligorski Former US Marine Instructor Current Department of the Army Training Specialist

Interview with Mr. Ted Newman:

Interview with Mr . Ted Newman http:// youtu.be/TOi5LdJ_RxA Transparency was difficult to manipulate Often times looked sloppy and unprofessional Did not lend itself to creativity Rarely used to today Was replaced because of superior technology available today that is much more compact Allows for more creativity Creates greater cost savings

Mr. Scott Waligorski :

Mr. Scott Waligorski https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbKWACe-huU Transparencies greatly enhanced the classroom Provided a visual stimulation The only tool available in the 1980s Was an improvement over the dry erase board Was prone to sequencing errors Often looked sloppy Technology naturally progresses Finished the interview by asking, ‘what’s next?’ What will replace slide presentation software and overhead projecto r

The Viewgraph and Overhead Projector Tetrad:

The Viewgraph and Overhead Projector Tetrad THE VIEWGRAPH AND OVERHEAD PROJECTOR ENHANCE (What does this technology do that is new?): The viewgraph and overhead projector allowed for the enlarged overhead display of instructional material, easily viewed by large groups. This allowed the facilitator to make changes and show examples. OBSOLETE: (What does this technology replace?) The viewgraph and overhead projector replaced, or enhanced, the use of the chalkboard, or dry erase board. RETRIEVE / REKINDLE: (What does this technology bring to mind (or retrieve) from the past?) The viewgraph and overhead projector brings the writing of primitive cave dwellers to mind. REVERSE: (What might replace this technology in the future, or what might it cause to occur?) The viewgraph and overhead projector will be obsolesced by technology that is not so bulky and cumbersome to set up and transport, and a display resolution that did not look sloppy and amateurish.

Slide Presentation Software and Overhead Projector Tetrad:

Slide Presentation Software and Overhead Projector Tetrad THE SLIDE PRESENTATION AND OVERHEAD PROJECTOR ENHANCE (What does this technology do that is new?): The slide presentation and overhead projector allows for the enlarged overhead display of instructional material, easily viewed by large groups, in a digital format. This allows the facilitator to make a more enhanced and interactive slide presentation. OBSOLETE: (What does this technology replace?) The slide presentation and overhead projector replaces the viewgraph and overhead projector RETRIEVE / REKINDLE: (What does this technology bring to mind (or retrieve) from the past?) The slide presentation and overhead projector brings the viewgraph and overhead projector back to memory. REVERSE: (What might replace this technology in the future, or what might it cause to occur?) The slide presentation and overhead projector may not be obsolesced any time soon. The display is very effective as it is. Although there is a call to get away from the instructor led, slide presentation heavy way of instruction, there is a still a need for a means to display information to large groups.

Evolutionary Technology:

Evolutionary Technology A new technology that is a progression or a growth of a previous one Obsolete technology originally emerged Obsolete technology became obsolete Emergent technology Improved the visual component in the classroom. Was a somewhat primitive way to display a visual component in the classroom Slide presentation software and projector is Allowed for the enlarged overhead display of instructional material, easily viewed by large groups. It was bulky and cumbersome to set up and transport. Had a display resolution that did not look sloppy and amateurish. Allowed the facilitator to make changes and show examples. Had a display resolution that looked sloppy and amateurish.

Rhyme of History:

Rhyme of History A new technology is a fresh emergence of the impact felt many years before from another technology Obsolete technology originally emerged Obsolete technology became obsolete Emergent technology Brings the writing of primitive cave dwellers to mind. Became obsolete because of the efficiencies gained by using slide presentation software and projector. Builds on the goodness of the transparency and dry erase board.

Science Fiction:

Science Fiction A new technology emerges from science based science fiction Obsolete technology originally emerged Obsolete technology became obsolete Emergent technology Not useful to explain. Not useful to explain. A similar example of a screen projection was shown in the film, ‘Total Recall’.

Disruptive Technology/Wild Card:

Disruptive Technology/Wild Card A new technology suddenly appears and creates a brand new way of thinking about a technological task Obsolete technology originally emerged Obsolete technology became obsolete Emergent technology The technology was a great improvement over its predecessors; the chalkboard and the dry erase board. Do not explain why because the slide software presentation method is not a great leap into the future, but merely an improvement of the original technology. A new technology has not yet replaced the slide software presentation method yet. I do not think that that replacement is on the horizon.

Increasing Returns:

Increasing Returns Between two competing technologies, one technology is chosen and the other disappears Obsolete technology originally emerged Obsolete technology became obsolete Emergent technology Does not explain. Perfect example of this force of technology, in that the two were available at the same time.

Red Queens:

Red Queens A process by which competition between two technologies results in the rapid development of both of them Obsolete technology originally emerged Obsolete technology became obsolete Emergent technology Does not explain. Does not explain. Does not explain.

The Future….:

The Future…. What’s next… What technology might obsolesce the current…
