It is important to recognize the fact that the suicide rate amongst teenagers is on the rise. Many teen suicides are caused by bullying within the schools and on the internet. Most are bullied for their sexuality, looks or religion. Slide 4: Main Reasons for Teen Suicide Divorce of parents The number one cause for teen suicide in America is DEPRESSION... of teens who commit suicide are depressed Violence in the house Inability to find success at school Feelings of worthlessness Rejection by friends or peers Substance abuse Death of someone close to teenager The suicide of a friend or someone he or she “knows” online 75% Slide 5: Every teen suicide is 100% preventable Talks about death and/or suicide (maybe even with a joking matter) Plans ways to kill him or her self Expresses worries that nobody cares about him or her Has attempted suicide in the past Dramatic changes in personality and behavior Withdraw from interacting with friends and family Shows signs of depression Signs of substance abuse Begins to act recklessly and engage in risk taking behaviors Begins to give away sentimental possessions Spends time online interacting with people who glamorize suicide and may even form suicide pacts WARNING SIGNS Slide 6: Suicide is the third leading cause of death in people between the ages of 15 and 24 after motor vehicle accidents and homicides. Suicide is also the 6th leading cause of death among 5 to 14 year olds The youngest person to date to commit suicide in the United States was six years old Facts that… may shock you!!
