Thyrogen is used :

Thyrogen is used in patients who have had a thyroidectomy (an operation to remove their thyroid gland) because they had cancer. Is used with a ‘ thyroglobulin test’, with or without a scan using radioactive iodine (131I), to detect any thyroid tissue that might have been left over after surgery. also be used in combination with higher doses of radioactive iodine to ablate (kill) any remaining thyroid tissue. It is used in patients who have had all or almost all of their thyroid gland removed and whose cancer has not spread to other parts of the body. .

Performing certain tests in patients who have or have had thyroid cancer. It is also used along with a radioactive agent to destroy remaining thyroid tissue in certain patients who have had their thyroid gland removed because of thyroid cancer.

Slide 4:

Thyrogen is a recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). It works by binding to TSH receptors on normal thyroid cells or on thyroid cancer tissue. This helps to determine if there are any thyroid cells or thyroid cancer cells remaining.

Do NOT use Thyrogen if: :

Before using Thyrogen::

Before using Thyrogen : Some medical conditions may interact with Thyrogen . if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast- feeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplementif If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substancesif If you have a history of heart disease, an overactive thyroid, or certain pituitary gland problems if you are infertile if you have recently had or will be having surgery

How to use Thyrogen::

How to use Thyrogen : Thyrogen is usually given as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. Thyrogen is for injection into the muscle only, preferably the buttocks. It is not to be injected into the vein . Do not use Thyrogen if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Ask your health care provider how to dispose of these materials after use. If you miss a dose of Thyrogen , contact your doctor right away.

Side effects of Thyrogen::

Side effects of Thyrogen : COMMON side effects Headache; nausea; vomiting; weakness. SEVERE side effects Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); fast heartbeat; irritability; nervousness; sweating.
