The Jakarta Post, Jakarta: Since its status was raised to ’alert’level on 23rd Sept. , Mt. Merapi’s activity has tended to increase with the number of lava outflows on Friday recorded at 30 or up from 21 on Thursday. Its multiphase tremors had also increased in frequency to 246 times on Friday from only 146 on Thursday, Ismail, an officer of the Mt. Merapi observation post in Babatan, Magelang, Central Java, said Saturday. The observation post had recorded six deep and 24 shallow volcanic tremors on Friday, up from 10 deep and 10 shallow volcanic tremors on Thursday, he said. On Friday a tectonic quake was also recorded, but there was none on the previous day. ”Despite the increased activity, Mount Merapi’s status is still at the ’alert’ level,” Ismail said as quoted by the Antara news agency. Ismail further said that the daily life of people living around the volcano on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta was not affected by its increased activity. Farmers were still seen working in their fields while some people were dredging a river to collect volcanic sand. The laest eruption of Mt. Merapi occurred in mid 2006 marked by intensive hot cloud flows, lava and volcanic ash eruptions.

In the middle of a bright day, I planned to have lunch in a new restaurant. I drove along the West Road at a reasonable speed. About fifty meters before the crossroads, a pedestrian who was walking on the pavement suddenly ran across the road in front of my car. I was so surprised that I braked as hard as I could. I was really panic, but I had to swerve to avoid the pedestrian. I crashed into a car which was parked by the side of the road. Fortunately, the pedestrian wasn’t injured, but I had a bad cut on my face because my head hit the wind screen. I had forgotten to put on my seat belt. An ambulance took me to the hospital where I had to have five stitches and took a rest for some hours. There was a lot of damage to my car; the wind screen was broken and the bodywork was badly dented. I was interviewed by the police in the hospital.

How do We Get Energy from Water?   From high in the hills, water flows down in the rivers and falls on its way to the sea. This mass of movement can be used to generate energy to work a machine, with the water falling on to the blades of the wheel, making it turn. This wheel is connected to a machine like a mill wheel, grinding corn. In ancient times, the use of hydraulic or water energy was not used very much. But from the Middle Ages onwards, it increased. As well as grinding cereals, it went on to weaving, paper-making, metal-working and so on. Then came the discovery of electricity and water came to be used to produce electrical energy in hydro-electric stations. Dams were bilt to create artificial lakes from which water fell on the turbines of a station at the foot of a dam. Like the old water mlls, when the water makes the turbines turn, they set the generator working which produces the electricity.

Slide 16:

The purpose of the text is ..... to explain the use of water for ancient people to explain how people use water to produce energy to describe how electricity is produced to tell why ancient people built mill wheels to persuade people to utilize water energy ”This mass of movement can be used to generate energy to work a machine.” (paragraph 1) The underlined word means .... cause improve increase influence produce
