Is this you when you think of assessment and measurement? :

Is this you when you think of assessment and measurement?

I Just Want to Spay/Neuter! :

I Just Want to Spay/Neuter! Are you visualizing the puppies and kittens being born while you are gathering stats?

Gather admission #s :

Gather admission #s Impounded Adopted Reclaimed Euthanized Transferred

Using Stats :

Using Stats One cat can produce 420,000 offspring. 4-9 million die in shelters. Euthanasia rates, intake rates, feral cat numbers Too hard to imagine!

Curse of Knowledge :

Curse of Knowledge Stop using jargon! We forget what it is like not to know what we know Focus on what is relevant for our audience not us

Don’t assume people know to fix their pets! :

Don’t assume people know to fix their pets! Think of the myths before you knew better: Animals will get fat and lazy You don’t have to fix males Some think they have to wait until first heat or 6 months old Others don’t know how young puppies and kittens can go into heat and have litters of their own

Stories :

Stories Stories are #1 way people remember Numbers tell a story not statistics Think in your own life. What stories do you remember? Who is this?

Videos :

Videos http://www.kshumane.org/capital-campaign-ads.html www.emancipet.org

Stories :

Stories The relationship with their animal Tying in with one individual face What can they easily do to help? Cody Fund raised $12,000

Which is more powerful? :

Which is more powerful? Story of Cody and how she was rescued from a shelter a day before euthanasia, became one of the best companions, and is continuing to help animals after her death, or the statistic that 4-9 million faceless animals die in shelters

Using Stats to Be Smarter With Funds :

Using Stats to Be Smarter With Funds By focusing your message on animals entering shelters Neuter before adoption Stopping them before they come in Offering public programs to address trends in shelters Problem can vary by region (hunting breeds, BSL, TNR/cat laws) Adoption programs won’t help ferals in shelters

West Valley City Shelter :

West Valley City Shelter Third largest (based on animal intake, not size of facility) shelter in the state Handles over 4,000 animals annually 2001, of 4,136 impounds, 2,768 euthanized. 2003, Of 1,678 killed in ‘03, 1,173 were cats

Feral Fix Partnership Program :

Feral Fix Partnership Program March 2004-February 2005, 508 cats TNR’d 78 kittens removed and adopted 31 cats relocated Cat intake and euthanasia dramatically down from the same twelve month period in 2003

West Valley City Utah Cat Intake and Euthanasia Before and After Feral Fix Intake down 26.58 % Euthanasia down 34.00 % :

West Valley City Utah Cat Intake and Euthanasia Before and After Feral Fix Intake down 26.58 % Euthanasia down 34.00 % Same period statewide Cat intake down 3.43 % Cat euthanasia down 4.88 %

Spay Street :

Spay Street Austin TX Group of Volunteers outreach program in Central Texas that educates owners about overpopulation and responsible care, utilizing residents of low-income areas with traditionally high levels of pet overpopulation. 2006 $3600 worth of sterilizations completed (at $39/spay)

Spay Street Goals :

Spay Street Goals 16 altered per week. Based on the reproductive history of animals that have been altered so far (many have had multiple litters), estimate each spay/neuter prevents an average of 4 per year. Potential to reduce TLAC intake by at least 2,000 animals annually. Animals tend to be in poor health, many pit bulls, feral cats and unsocialized dogs. Reduces cost of housing and treating medical conditions.
