What we’re working toward: Safe and effective (animals, humans, environment) Permanent (poss. long-term?) One treatment (most likely an injection) Documented effects on health and behavior Affordable

Brief History :

Brief History Research began in earnest in the 1970’s Research stimulated by development of “the pill” Various approaches studied, but did not progress or moved forward slowly

What’s Out There? :

What’s Out There? Contraception Azagly-Nafarelin/Gonazon® Deselorin/Suprelorin® Canine Gonadotropin Releasing Factor Immunotherapeutic Sterilization VCD/ChemSpay™ Zinc Gluconate/Neutersol®/Esterilsol™

Suprelorin® and Gonazon® :

Suprelorin® and Gonazon® Delivered by implant (micro-chip size) Approved in Australia, New Zealand, EU for 1 yr contraception in male dogs and female dogs respectively (female version not introduced). Technology contracepts female dogs and male/female cats as well (3 yr duration in queens) 3 year duration in cats ?

Canine Gonadotropin Releasing Factor Immunotherapeutic :

Canine Gonadotropin Releasing Factor Immunotherapeutic First immunocontraceptive vaccine conditionally approved in U.S. Pfizer For treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in male dogs Will cause contraception (~6 mos), though not labeled for this use

ChemSpay™ :

ChemSpay™ Very early stage work with chemical sterilant for females. Works in mice; hope to formulate for cats and dogs.

Gonacon™USDA/APHIS Center for Veterinary Medicine :

Gonacon™USDA/APHIS Center for Veterinary Medicine Injectable contraceptive under regulatory review for use in cervids (deer family) Study shows over 3 year effect in (some) cats Study underway in dogs. Refining formulation to improve safety

Neutersol®/Esterilsol™ :

Neutersol®/Esterilsol™ Intra-testicular injection First permanent non-surgical sterilant to receive regulatory approval FDA-approved for male dogs 3-10 months old. Not current plans for U.S. availability Used effectively off-label in 10,000 adult dogs in Mexico study. Introduced in MX in ‘08 with plans for expansion

What’s the Hold-Up? :

What’s the Hold-Up? Economics Drug development costly and risky Demand from low-income sector of less interest to pharmaceutical companies Culture Lack of consumer knowledge Resistance to change in veterinary community Science Under-funded researchers, working in isolation Lack of funding for basic repro research

Understanding Veterinary Perspectives :

Understanding Veterinary Perspectives Surveyed: 200 private practice vets (late 2007) 240 Shelter vets(2008) For new products to be successful, will need to develop more support from vets.

Vet Study Key Findings :

Vet Study Key Findings 94/96% Vets agree unplanned litters contribute to unwanted pets 6 in 10 shelter vets – agree a need for non surgical sterilants 6 in 10 private practice vets – the opposite. Concept: 3 year cat (m/f)  contraceptive – one treatment/suppresses hormones 52% of vets would recommend Only 30% of shelter vets would recommend

Reaching out to Veterinarians :

Reaching out to Veterinarians Vets as Directors and Advisors Support from AVMA, Association of Shelter Vets, Cornell Vet School, others Reaching out to vets through publications, conferences
