Rhetoric and Symbols CHAPTER ONESlide 3: She is pictured in seductive and empowering postures to make the suggestion that if women were to drink this beer they would seem to be more seductive and powerful. Aside from the woman, another powerful symbol is the use of the word line at the bottom of the picture that states “Drop Dead Refreshing.” St. Pauli Girl replaces the word gorgeous with refreshing which adds to the promiscuity and overall idea they want to get across to viewers. St. Pauli Girl brewery had a very unique way of advertising beer. Instead of a more expected photograph such as a woman holding a beer or simply a picture of the beer bottle, they went outside the box and made a computerized woman out of the alcohol. The use of the “beer created woman” was a powerful symbol to grab readers attention. The ad seemingly looks to get a hold of both male and female drinkers with its use of the woman. She is used as a source for seduction to bring the men to try their alcohol and as well a source of woman empowerment. POWERFUL Rhetoric and SymbolsSlide 4: Comparing Classical Theorists ARISTOTLE PLATO CHAPTER TWOSlide 5: P O PLATO ARISTOTLE Reality can only be experienced in an ideal, conceptual sense. Any person could use dialect to discover what is good and true, but to use rhetoric one must possess truth. Rhetoric is inferior to dialect and has no connection to truth and morality. T he reality of experiences can be determined by observation. Rhetoric is similar to dialect, it is its complement. Rhetoric presents arguments and dialect tests those arguments. IIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIII Thoughts on Dialect Thoughts on Rhetoric Absolute truth determines rhetoric. Rhetoric is probable truth. Most Effective I believe that Aristotle’s theory towards writing is more effective than Plato’s. Plato believed that rhetoric should only be used to convey absolute truth, when I believe that rhetoric could be used for much more than just truth, it can convey misconceptions and the falsification of what is orated or inscribed. Comparing Classical TheoristsSlide 6: CHAPTER THREE Identifying the SublimeSlide 7: Blair believed that the sublime must discuss some sort of subliminal object. The object must convey a clear impression to influence strong emotions of the audience. These emotions are delightful, according to Blair, but they must entail “awfulness” and “solemnity.” The subliminal object must have attributes of strength, simplicity, and concision. He believed that “mighty power and strength” was needed to drive the sublime in rhetoric. Identifying the Sublime The All-Seeing Eye President Ronald Reagan Columbia Space Shuttle Speech January 28, 1986 “Your loved ones were daring and brave, and they had that special grace, that special spirit that says, ‘Give me a challenge and I’ll meet it with joy.’ They had a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths. They wished to serve, and they did. They served all of us.” According to Longinus, the sublime was to have the ability to momentarily lift audience members outside of themselves through the use of spoken language. The sublime manipulates a natural power that we as humans possess and it raises that power, which gives us the “outside ourselves” feeling. The sublime is directly in effect because of a speakers abilities to convey nature and art through spoken words.Slide 8: CHAPTER FOUR Argument LogSlide 9: SUN MON TUES WED THUR FRI SAT CONTEXT Argument with Dad about NIU football. Argument with Fiancé about importance of room cleaning. Argument with Coach Kill about punt team formation. Argument with dad about confronting coach about less practice. Argument with Mother In-law about city distance. Argument with teammate about seating situation. Argument with teammate about movie. CLAIM Dad: NIU should be in the top 25 in the nation this week. Rachel: The room needs to be cleaned tonight instead of doing home work. Me: The punt scheme did not favor protection and is not efficient. Me: I did not want to confront coach kill about practice in fear of problems. Me: It is more than 25 miles from Elgin to NIU. Me: I should not have to share a seat on the bus with a freshman. Me: The movie is really good although it has a very unique and different plot. EVIDENCE NIU convincingly beat Ball State 59-21 to make the team 9-2 overall with a win streak of 8 games, and the MAC West representative for the MAC championship game. The room was covered in clothes and we needed room to work on homework. There is a lot of homework needed to be done. We have had three of our punts blocked this season. The formation that we ran last season did not allow any punts blocked. I ’ve practiced so much recently that my legs and arms became really sore which caused me to not play as well as I could during games. I drive roundtrip from Elgin to NIU every day, so I should know how many miles a one way trip is. It takes me 45 minutes for this drive which consists of city and highway driving. I am a 4 year senior at NIU. One of my teammates needed a place to sit. I told him to sit with the first year NIU player who happened to be a senior. He does not have seniority which is developed years into NIU. I have seen the movie and everybody that I know that has seen the movie, really likes it. It’s plot line is unique, however, it is very creative and its not like the usual romantic comedy. TYPE OF REASONING Deductive Reasoning Causal Generalization. Deductive Reasoning Argument by Sign. Deductive Reasoning Argument by Sign. Deductive Reasoning Causal Generalization. Deductive Reasoning Argument by Classification. Deductive Reasoning Argument by Classification. Deductive Reasoning Causal Generalization. Argument LogSlide 10: The second argument that did not come across effective was that of the argument with my dad about the football team’s ranking. I was not persuaded and it did not convince me to consider to re-evaluate my opinion on the situation. Argument Log The first one was the argument with my Fiancé. She was able persuade me through presenting her point that cleaning the room first before doing our homework so that it would promote learning and better focus was a much better idea than working in a dirty room. The second argument was about the distance in miles from Elgin to NIU. This was effective because the use of evidence strongly supported my argument. The third argument was about seating situation on the bus. I had a strong opinion and was able to convince others that I was correct. Ineffective Arguments The Argument with my teammate about the movie was not effective because I could not persuade him to watch the movie because I did not seem convincing enough that it was a really good movie. 2 3 1 1 2 Effective Arguments Persuasive Evidence The most persuasive evidence was that of my dad’s argument about our football team should be ranked in the Top 25 because he was able to use factual and strong evidence to support his claim. He had numerous facts that he could fall back on to propel each statement of his argument. It almost proved true in fact, we ended up being ranked number 26 in the country after that game. 1 Effective Warrants Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday’s arguments all have strong warrants to propel their evidence to strong claims. These warrants worked best because they had the strongest evidence to support it and as well the most logical result from the evidence. 1Slide 11: CHAPTER FIVE The Semantic Triangle & Advertising PLAYSlide 12: The Semantic Triangle and Advertising “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” Symbol Referent Thought This quote foreshadows what happens in the movie, Batman starts being viewed as the enemy because he has been around for so long. Batman and Bruce Wayne. T S The movie trailer for Batman: The Dark Knight, effectively conveyed a strong emotion reaction. It was able to engage my interest even more on the preview and caused me to feel a sense of worry for what possibly could happen to Batman in the movie. There were many unique reactions to the symbols throughout the movie trailer. There were some initial reactions of interest , as well delayed reactions of interest, and little non-reactions. Their emotional appeals to the Dark Knight‘s trailer were ethical in ways that students were talking amongst themselves about how they actually felt compelled towards Batman’s well-being and that how unjust could a society take advantage of Batman.Slide 13: CHAPTER SIX Comic ReliefSlide 14: Cathy’s mom is dead set on finding a boyfriend for her daughter. She pushes and pushes on the matchmaking to the point of frustration and causes Cathy to not want to be involved with her mom on the man hunt. Cathy is belittled by her mom’s continuing to input her opinion that she needs to be with Irving and that it sets the impression to Cathy that her mom would not see anybody else fit for her. If Cathy were to date Irving, she would no longer receive the incongruity and belittlement from her mother. Cathy should expect that from her mother since Cathy is friends again with her ex-boyfriend and her mother liked him. Instead of wishing the Sarge Happy Birthday on his birthday cake, Beetle Baily has words of belittlement placed on it. It shows how foolish of a mistake it was to remind Sarge of his downfall on his special day. The Sarge is belittled when he receives a cake on his birthday reminding him that he’s on a diet. It shows that Baily is implying that even though it’s his birthday he should not over indulge and stay focused on his diet. The result of Baily’s incongruity and belittlement, brings forth a whole new outlook on the situation. If the Sarge were to have been more aware about his weight, he wouldn’t have to be watching how much cake to eat on his own birthday. Comic Relief Incongruity Belittling Enlightenment Incongruity Belittling EnlightenmentSlide 15: CHAPTER SEVEN Classroom TextsSlide 16: The Symbols that compose the text I am studying are clothing wear that have the letters NIU or words written Northern Illinois University. NIU/Northern Illinois University represent the college university located in Dekalb , Illinois. The school mascot is the Huskies, and it is known for its Football team and Business program. When students wear apparel that have anything NIU on it, they are attempting to represent their school pride. So the ideological orientation is that they are all proud to be Northern Illinois University students, and that they agree that it is of enough importance to represent their school. They support their school by wearing the clothes while at class, in public, or even private events to make it known they are from NIU. Classroom TextsSlide 17: CHAPTER EIGHT Gender Construction in the Media play sceneSlide 18: D uring the scene in the movie Mona Lisa Smile, Kirsten Dunst tries to convey to her teacher (Julia Roberts) that the newly-wedded women are supposed to be glorified and excused for absences for “setting up house” for their husbands. Kirsten tries to bring forth that the man is more important than the woman, that her education is not as important to her as becoming a wife and working within the house. Her administration that “turns their heads” are supportive of the women missing time for marriages and that even their educated teaching should become a step back from women’s weddings. This thought results in the understanding that during their time, women’s advancement in life is not as important to that of the man’s advancement and that the woman should only focus on house keeping and catering to their husbands. The popular media influences how men and women should act through movies, television shows and networks, popular faces, and more. In most movies, women are portrayed as the one who raises and cleans the house while the husband is at work. Shows that are predominantly aired during the middle of the day are targeted for stay at home moms. As the movie continued, the general idea that came to conclusion was that whenever women consider that they want to work outside the house, they were frowned upon and even told that they are not allowed to do so, Gender ConstructionSlide 19: CHAPTER NINE Afrocentric Rhetoric PLAYSlide 20: President Obama used a sense of rhythm to connect with his audience. He was able to get in there frame of mind from the beginning of his speech when he related to what all Americans have in common right now, which are our worries about economy and the soldiers overseas. He used the Linguistic code by listing off the problems at hand in a historical sense about the Oil rig spill. He explains this through a musical attitude, where everything flows like it is lyrics to a grand song. President Obama’s delivery engaged the audience and invited them to be involved in his act to correct the Oil spread throughout the coast. Obama was able to convey to his audience about who he is and what he is trying to do through the effectiveness of his speech. He was able to engage with his audience and capture their support on his position to fix the oil issue. His form of Afrocentric rhetoric differs from that of non- afrocentric speakers, he engages more emotion and a stronger relationship with his audience. Afrocentric rhetoric is not only successful in speeches, but as well music. Rap and R&B music are directly impacted by the way things are said and the actions committed within American political rhetoric.Slide 21: CHAPTER TEN Inventory of Media TypesSlide 22: COLD HOT When I use the cell phone, it requires the most interaction to get the information I seek. Cell phones are the most time-binding, whereas, I need to input my fair share of involvement for the conversation to continue. COLDEST When I watch TV it requires my attention and as well my commitment to sit in front of the TV. There is the demand of paying attention enough to change the channel if I want to, and if it were not for audiences to watch, TV would not be around. When reading the “funny’s in the back of the newspaper, it takes the commitment to read the entire strip, regardless of its length, so that you can understand the ultimate punch line of the joke within the cartoon. When looking at photographs, it requires less amount of commitment and a lot of information can be gained from just one picture. It is a snapshot of a moment in time where many things were in process. When I listen to music on an iPod, it does not require as much of an involvement as that of the photographs. I can pause the music at any time and move on with life. I receive a lot of information on the type of music and personalities of the musicians based off the lyrics and overall sound. When I watch a movie, I can pause the scene at any given moment, come back to it whenever I want and have not sense of needing to involve myself more than that. There is little interaction and like a photo, its not just one moment that tells the story, its many moments in a very short time. HOTTESTSlide 23: Nolan OWEN “The fiancé” On June 18, 2011, I will be getting married to my beautiful fiancée, Rachel. I have a tie for my two number one priorities, and my commitment to her for the rest of our lives is one of them. My identity shifts all day every day, I have to make an effort every day to distinguish between certain aspects of my life. Shifting Identities CHAPTER ELEVEN Shifting IdentitiesSlide 24: Nolan OWEN “daddy” On November 18, 2009, Rachel and I were blessed with a beautiful boy. He is my other number one priority. I love my soon to be bride and I love my son more than I ever though I could imagine. I devote my entire life to the both of them. My goal as a father, is to be what my dad was to me, the man I look up to most. I can only dream to have the same relationship with my son that my dad had with me. Shifting IdentitiesSlide 25: Nolan OWEN “Football player” In 2007, I became a part of the Northern Illinois Huskie family. I have played all 4 years here, and it has been a great experience, and I am forever grateful. NIU football has contributed to molding me into the man that I am today. With the technology of mass texts I am always able to keep track of my football schedule times and balance it all out between football and family. Shifting IdentitiesSlide 26: Nolan OWEN “Student” Along with being a spouse, father, and a football player, I am also a student. I will be graduating in May of 2011. If it were not for an education that I am obtaining out here in Illinois, I would not be living the blessed life that I am living now. My identities are all fueled by rhetoric, rhetoric is what allows for us to even categorize all of our different characteristics. We have identities through rhetoric. Shifting IdentitiesSlide 27: CHAPTER TWELVE Definitions of CultureSlide 28: Culture is what starts your background. It is what you have known for the majority of your life and you have practices that you follow from that lifestyle. It is a piece of your values and beliefs, it is a part of where and whom you grew up with. It is what helps identifies you and makes you who you are. Within cultures that people obtain themselves in, there are symbols that represent that culture. It is possible to be in one or more various cultures, due to the advancement in human life, where people change after a while and they feel more associated with one cultural belonging than another. Definitions of Culture The book believes that “culture studies is a discipline that is concerned with the production, circulation, and reception of meanings in industrialized societies.” They believe that the media is a large influence on a person’s culture. They believe that the way persons make sense of the world is through sharing conceptual beliefs, which in turn is culture according to the book.I believe that the book has somewhat of it right, that we are influenced by others in culture, however our views on that culture changes persons and as well the way they act within that culture as well.Slide 29: CONCLUDING ASSIGNMENTSlide 30: Rhetoric and other Areas of Communication COMS 370: Principles of Advertising This class taught me how to use rhetoric in ways of advertising so I can promote my side-job of coaching long snappers in football efficiently and proactively. SIMILAR Both classes taught how to interpret rhetoric and use them both for selling a type of product and communicate more efficiently with clients or partners. SIMILAR COMS 358: Intro. to Field Production Both were just as useful and similar to help with my second idea of a career. The career would be to promotional film edit. This is crucial to rhetoric, because it uses the mass media to influence persons with symbols of film images. COMS 400: Rhetoric Rhetoric adds assurance to symbolic meanings and insights to prove that they are crucial to ALL of today’s careers. SIMILAR COMS 355: Media Writing Media Writing was a class that teaches you how to radio script and film script produce. Scriptwriting is one of my strong areas. I look to as a third side job to finish a film script I created a couple years ago. Between the three classes listed down below and Rhetoric listed above, I have gained an ability to understand information based from rhetoric and a better consumer mind of information. I can relate possibly every experience in life rhetorical y originated. You do not have the permission to view this presentation. In order to view it, please contact the author of the presentation.
