The Sun and Weather :

The Sun and Weather Big Question: How does the sun’s energy cause changes in weather?

The Sun :

The Sun How does the sun affect your lives?

The Sun :

The Sun Weather Day to day conditions in the atmosphere Sun affects weather by: Sun warming earth Radiation – energy from sun that reaches Earth Some of energy is reflected back into space Some of energy is absorbed in atmosphere Some of energy reaches Earth surface

Slide 4:

Lithosphere Outermost layer of the Earth’s surface Lithosphere absorbs the heat from sun to warm air near ground

Warm and Cold Air :

Warm and Cold Air Cold Air sinks because it is more dense. Warm air rises because it is less dense. Convection current – movement of air caused when air is unevenly heated, so that part of it becomes less dense, rises, and then cools and sinks

SunLithosphere vs Hydrosphere :

SunLithosphere vs Hydrosphere Sun warms the land (lithosphere) which does not absorb warmth for long During the day the lithosphere releases warmth Sun warms the water (hydrosphere) which can absorb warmth for a longer period of time During the night, the hydrosphere releases warmth it absorbed during the day.

Sea Breeze :

Sea Breeze Why do they call this convection current a sea breeze? During day land releases warm air as sun beats down Cooler air from ocean rushes over land replacing warm air that is rising

Land Breeze :

Land Breeze Why would you call this convection current a land breeze? Ocean releases warm air at night Cooler air from land rushes over ocean Warm ocean air rises and cold air from land sinks to replace it.

What kind of weather do you predict is on the other side of this mountain? :

What kind of weather do you predict is on the other side of this mountain? Sun warms water Heat allows water to evaporate Clouds form from water vapor Precipitation falls, clouds run out of water vapor by time they reach top of mountain range

The other side of the mountain may look like this… :

The other side of the mountain may look like this…

Climate :

Climate The climate of an area is average of all weather conditions over a long period of time What type of weather does each of these climate zones have? Polar Zone Temperate Zone Tropical Zone
