Slide 4: The spread of the Influenza is done thru coughing, sneezing or touching objects that are contaminated with the virus and than people touching their nose or mouth. The most effective time to catch the virus is in the first five days of the illness. Children many times can be contagious up to ten days. The “swine flu” cannot be spread by eating pork, because the virus is not transmissible through food. The best way to prevent is by washing your hands with soap and water or with alcohol. Slide 5: There are antiviral medicines you can take to prevent or treat swine flu. There is a vaccine available to protect against swine flu. You can help to prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza by - Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use alcohol-based hand cleaners. Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. Trying to avoid close contact with sick people. Staying home from work or school if you are sick. DRUGS USED IN SWINE FLU : DRUGS USED IN SWINE FLU VACCINE :Vaccine - influenza; Immunization - influenza; Flu shot; Flu vaccine. ANTIVIRAL MEDICINE : The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) information says that A-H1N1/09 virus (the swine flu) can be treated if caught very early with two of the currently available anti-viral medications oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). Tamiflu is for treatment in adults and children aged 1 year and older, and must be taken within 48 hours of the first symptom. Slide 7: There are currently 4 types of antiviral drugs that are licensed for use in the US for the treatment of influenza: Amantadine, Rimantadine, Oseltamivir and Zanamivir. While most swine influenza viruses have been susceptible to these drugs, the most recent swine-flu viruses isolated from humans, are resistant to Amantadine and Rimantadine. Slide 8: Amantadine Rimantadine EX: Amantadine hydrochloride EX: Rimantadine hydrochloride Slide 9: None of these drugs prevent us from getting the virus like a vaccine would, but can lesson the severity of the symptoms and dramatically shorten their duration when given at the right timing in relation to exposure.
