PRESENTATION ON LIFE & WORKS OF RAJ REWAL by Ar. Nishita Kedia ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES R aj R ewal’s architectural productions are not leased upon a theory: A ccording to him a functional design should be involved with a specific emotional flavour or poetic mood to which he refers as the “rasa” of the building. H is buildings gives the perception of traditional morphology into a contemporary equivalent. H e emphasised on structural masses and natural material.

PRESENTATION ON LIFE & WORKS OF RAJ REWAL by Ar. Nishita Kedia ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES His extensive use of stone and stone grid for structure ornamentation for expressive purpose of any structural system. H e first experimented use of stone as a cladding material, and then as an independent architectural element. He then developed the use of stone as an integral part of brick masonry. I n Lisbon, he has bonded steel and stone to act in unison as a structural support system.

PRESENTATION ON LIFE & WORKS OF RAJ REWAL by Ar. Nishita Kedia DEVELOPMENT AS AN ARCHITECT Raj Rewal recalls 3 encounters during those formative years which shaped his architectural ideology He relates to his interest in structures, which was cultivated by his English education, craft tradition, during the review of his diploma projects. While working as a set designer for several avante grade theatre productions in London, he learnt that each dramatic work had its particular character which he intercepts as the “rasa” of the building. When working in office of Michel Eco in Paris, he absorbed the principles of urban design and planning

PRESENTATION ON LIFE & WORKS OF RAJ REWAL by Ar. Nishita Kedia DEVELOPMENT AS AN ARCHITECT The other influences that were important to his development as an architect on his return to India were: Seeing the work of Le-Corbusier : Corbusier’s works convinced him that it was possible to be rational and employ modern means to build in India. T eaching History at the School of Planning and Architecture, N ew Delhi exposed him to vernacular traditions of building in India His ability to retain the conceptual purity of his foundational ideals has been his strength and in some other ways his limitations.
