Premium member Presentation Transcript Pennsylvania : Pennsylvania Leading the way in technology Lives change….needs change : Lives change….needs change As the lives of Americans began to change so did our need for improvements They needed a stronger and more efficient metal The ability to make steel had been around forever but it was not cheap! William Kelly : William Kelly Kelly will patent the blast furnace He lived in Pittsburg and because of his invention steel will be mass produced Everything from railroad rails, nails to machine parts and wire will be made with steel It will replace the need for iron By the 1870’s Pittsburg will be producing 2/3rds of the countries steel Aluminum : Aluminum Like steel, aluminum had been around for a while but was expensive to make Two scientists will come together to make the Pittsburg Reduction Company Eventually the demand for the product was overwhelming and a new plant was built ALCOA- the Aluminum Company of America The next time you drink a can of soda think about that! Coal…the big dog : Coal…the big dog Most of Pennsylvania’s industrial growth was due to coal It was used for heating, transportation and in making other products The by-products were used in other chemical productions Many towns and cities in Pennsylvania were established because of coal mining Oil….what would we do without it? : Oil….what would we do without it? Pennsylvania’s oil became more important as industries grew Oil was used as a lubricant, grease as well as fuel for automobiles and later airplanes At fist PA produces more oil than anywhere in the world but that will not last It would be fine to refine…. : It would be fine to refine…. As the need for gasoline increased so does the need for refining William L. Mellon founded the Gulf Oil Company in Pittsburgh It was the first company to open a service station for automobiles It’s Electric…Boogy, Woogy! : It’s Electric…Boogy, Woogy! Thomas Edison discovered how to use electricity to light a glass bulb His first plant was built in Sunbury, PA and the Sunbury City Hotel was the first building lit with electric bulbs His problem was that his direct currents could not travel far Westinghouse is the man! : Westinghouse is the man! Westinghouse had many inventions Possibly the most important was his accomplishments with electricity Factories now used electricity instead of steam power Streetcars (Electric City)will be powered for the first time with electricity Do you remember? : Do you remember?
